Valada on the Tagus: River Landscapes, Boat Tours and Avieiro Culture

Valada lies in the Tagus riverside and floodplain, in the alluvial zone of Lezíria do Tejo. The landscape is closely linked to the river: for centuries, the Tagus around Valada was used for transporting goods by boat, irrigating the fields and fishing. Another historical highlight is the Ponte Rainha D. Amélia in Porto de Muge. It was built and inaugurated by King D. Carlos in 1904. The Igreja Matriz de Valada also contributes to the cultural character of the village: its façade has an angled gable and a bell tower, and it also displays Mannerist religious architecture. On 18 March 1906, the “Quilómetro Lançado de Valada” took place in Valada as the first speed trial. More than a dozen participants took part, and the royal family was present.
