Ferreira Do Zêzere: Water, Culture and History

Ferreira Do Zêzere combines the landscape of the Rio Zêzere with the Albufeira de Castelo de Bode, extensive woodland and a remarkable density of cultural traces. The municipality is bordered by the Rio Zêzere to the east and is considered a geographical transition zone between the Ribatejo and the Beiras. This makes the region suitable for travellers who do not want to limit their stay to a single activity: on the water, exercise and relaxation take centre stage, while trails, churches, towers and archaeological sites provide other points of interest.

Water experiences on the Rio Zêzere and Albufeira

The Rio Zêzere and the Albufeira de Castelo do Bode offer opportunities for wakeboarding, stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing. At Praia Fluvial da Castanheira, you can also enjoy water skiing, windsurfing, rowing and other such activities with the support of the Centro Náutico. Praia Fluvial da Bairrada/Bairradinha has a natural sandy beach and the calm waters of the Rio Zêzere. Its facilities include toilets, changing rooms, a first-aid station, a bar, a terrace, a car park, accessible walkways, a picnic area and a viewpoint with panoramic views. The modern bathing area was inaugurated on 13 June 2026. There is also an anchorage and a petrol station for boats at Lago Azul. Further recreational areas and river beaches can be found along the Albufeira of the Castelo de Bode Dam.

Trails through woodland and riverside landscapes

Several different routes are available for active days. The PR1 Vigia do Zêzere begins at the tourist office and leads through the centre of Dornes. Along woodland paths, it offers panoramic views of the Dornes peninsula. The approximately two-kilometre-long Estação da Biodiversidade trail runs alongside a watercourse through typical riverside vegetation and woodland. It was created to observe and record local biodiversity, with a particular focus on butterflies.

The PR2 Trilho do Lagar Velho and the PR3 Trilho da Pombeira also focus on landscape views: one offers views of the Albufeira de Castelo de Bode, while the other looks out over Pombeira, Zaboeira, Alcamim and also the reservoir. The PR4 Trilho do Castro links the route with the Capela de São Pedro de Castro, which is classified as cultural heritage. The PR6 Zêzere Sagrado leads to the discovery of three churches classified as buildings of public interest.

Dornes and the region’s cultural history

Since the 12th century, Dornes has been associated with the religious cult of Nossa Senhora do Pranto. The present building of the Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Pranto was erected in 1453 at the initiative of D. Gonçalo de Sousa. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Pranto combines Gothic, Mannerist and Baroque architectural styles; the sanctuary also houses an 18th-century organ. In front of the steps is the rebuilt, small and simple Capela de Santo António.

The Torre de Dornes is believed to have been built by the Knights Templar in the 13th century as part of a defensive line. The tradition surrounding Nossa Senhora do Pranto inspires the annual staging of Círios, which come from several parts of the country. Another regional speciality is the traditional Zêzere boats known as “Três Tábuas” or “Abrangel”, which continue to be built in Dornes.

Historical traces can also be found outside Dornes. The Capela de São Pedro de Castro in Pombeira stands on a hill and is classified as a building of public interest; the present chapel was rebuilt in the 14th century. A stone tablet on its main façade provides evidence of the presence of the Romans. In the vicinity of Quebrada do Meio, there is a section of a Roman road and a bridge dating from the period of Roman occupation. The Gruta de Avecasta points to human presence dating back to the Bronze Age. Archaeological investigations found that a village once stood inside the cave. There is a restriction to bear in mind when planning a visit to the Gruta de Avecasta.

From Lisbon, travel is via the A1, A23 and A13. At the Ferreira do Zêzere sul exit, follow the EN238 variant for five kilometres to the centre. Direct Rede Expressos buses run from Lisbon to Ferreira do Zêzere. By train, travel to Tomar and cover the remaining distance by taxi or using the on-demand transport service in Médio Tejo.
