Monforte: Culture, Nature and Regional Discoveries

Monforte combines impressive historical landmarks with paths through a varied landscape and a distinctive regional culture. Churches, Tiles and the History of the Town

At Terreiro do Castelo, sections of the original wall of the large fortress commissioned by King D. Dinis in 1309 have been preserved. In the Igreja de Santa Maria da Graça, notable features include the rectangular floor plan, the main chapel, the single-nave layout and the gallery supported by a round arch.

The Igreja de Santa Maria Madalena offers further art-historical details, including 17th-century frescoes, carved granite columns, decorative stucco, decorative paintings and flat tombs from the 17th and 18th centuries. The permanent exhibition “Sagrado & Profano em Monforte” is housed in the Museu Municipal – Igreja da Madalena. Sacred artworks, liturgical objects and old documents are displayed there. On weekdays, visiting hours are from 09:00 to 12:30 and from 14:00 to 17:30.

One particular focus is Monforte Sacro. The tiles were installed in the church in 1749 and painted around 1745. The nave contains sixteen large figurative, narrative tile panels. The works are attributed to the Lisbon workshop of Valentim de Almeida (1692–1779). In the Igreja do Espírito Santo, further 18th-century tile panels depict the life and miracles of Saint Queen Isabel.

Archaeological Sites and Paths through the Landscape

History also reaches far back beyond the town centre. The early Christian basilica of Torre de Palma was built over a Roman temple and remodelled several times between the late 4th and 7th centuries. The Villa Romana de Torre de Palma is located on the EN 369 from Monforte towards Vaiamonte, on the Herdade de Torre de Palma, approximately 5 km from Monforte. Its mosaic floors are among the most impressive artistic collections in the country and display numerous details and scenes from Greco-Roman mythology. The Mosaico dos Cavalos suggests that horse breeding was one of the economic activities of the villa.

Several different route ideas are available for active days. The Grande Rota dos Montes de Monforte leads into the ZPE Monforte and onwards to the archaeological site of Torre de Palma with its Monte. The Percurso Entre Ribeiras, on the other hand, has an almost flat profile and frequently crosses watercourses. It passes through dense riverside vegetation inhabited by otters (Lutra lutra) and genets (Genetta genetta). Anyone who prefers an almost flat route can include this trail in their day’s plans.

The Rota das Antas da Rabuje begins at Praça da República in Monforte and returns along the same route. The archaeological sites of Rabuje are incorporated into the “das Antas de Rabuje” walking trail. The group comprises seven Neolithic or Chalcolithic dolmens, designated Rabuje 1 through Rabuje 7. Rabuje 8 is a granite outcrop with a rock-art panel featuring so-called cup marks.

Regional Cuisine and Cultural Particularities

Regional cuisine in the Monforte area includes açorda with coriander or pennyroyal mint. Regional products include black pork sausages and Queijo Nisa with protected designation of origin (PDO). The pastoral craft tradition includes work made from wood, horn, cork, hide and leather. The Monforte tourist office, with a permanent exhibition and a shop selling traditional products, is also located in the Galeria Municipal building for initial orientation.
