Campo Maior: Fortresses, Paper Flowers and Nature

Campo Maior combines the vastness of the Alentejo with an unusually rich cultural history. The Portuguese town lies near the Spanish border on a plain that stretches for more than 50 kilometres. Fortresses, Churches and the History of the Town

A defining attraction is Campo Maior’s bastioned fortification, built in the 17th and 18th centuries. It can be explored on foot; signs along the route provide information about the historic complex. The castle is also connected with the story of its reconstruction during the reign of D. Dinis. At CIFA, the walls and castle are linked with rooms presenting various aspects of the town’s military history.

The Museu Aberto offers further impressions of the past. It tells the story of Campo Maior and its population from prehistoric times to the present day, while also showing the enduring connection with Spain. In ethnographic form, it also explores the houses, occupations, clothing, customs and traditions of the people of Campo Maior. The Museu de Arte Sacra displays around 150 paintings, images, items of furniture and goldsmith’s work collected from churches in the Município Campo Maior. It is located in the Capela de Nossa Senhora do Carmo, an example of popular Baroque architecture built in 1801.

The Igreja Matriz de Campo Maior also offers specific historical details: it was built between 1570 and 1646 and has nine Baroque altars and two galleries dating from the mid-18th century. The ossuary chapel is linked to the explosion of the castle’s arsenal caused by a lightning strike, which destroyed a large part of the town. Due to its aesthetic uniqueness, it is considered an important and original example of Christian funerary art in Portugal.

Paper Flowers, Coffee and Regional Products

The Festas do Povo are a particularly distinctive tradition. During these community festivals, the streets are decorated with millions of paper flowers in different shapes, colours and patterns. The members prepare the decorations over a period of nine months. At the Casa das Flores, you can learn more about the origins and history of the festivals, their organisation and the production of the paper flowers. An interactive experience makes this visit an informative complement to a tour of the town.

The Centro de Ciência do Café explores the journey of the coffee bean from planting and roasting to the finished drink in the cup. Demonstrations and tastings of coffee drinks with baristas complement the exhibition. The olive oil museum, in turn, explains the care of the olive groves, the olive harvest and the processing of olives into olive oil. The Adega Mayor at Herdade das Argamassas, located amid 55 hectares of vineyards, is also part of the region’s highlights.

The Caia Reservoir and Paths Through the Landscape

The Caia Reservoir is the largest body of water in the Município Campo Maior. It offers beautiful landscapes and good conditions for leisure activities; part of the lake is designated as an Important Bird Area. When birdwatching in the Campo Maior area, you can observe great bustards, little bustards and wintering cranes. The PR2 Percurso dos Grous is particularly associated with the cranes between November and February. The linear trail is approximately 4.7 kilometres long and has an observation platform, but it is currently closed due to maintenance work and temporarily unavailable.

The PR4 Defesas de Campo Maior circular route is of moderate difficulty, 7.5 kilometres long and takes approximately three hours. From an elevated position, it offers views of the town and the surrounding landscape.
