Gavião – Trails, Culture and the Tagus Landscape

Gavião lies at the meeting point of Alentejo, Ribatejo and Beira Interior. The landscape combines the Tagus with hiking trails, viewpoints and places of historical significance. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home for your trip, you can therefore first consider whether long circular hikes, water-based activities, nature observation or culture should be the main focus. Gavião offers specific points of interest for these different types of holiday days.

Hiking Trails for Different Day Plans

The PR1 – Arribas do Tejo begins at Largo Luís de Camões in Belver. The moderately difficult circular trail is 16.2 km long and takes approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes. This information helps you classify the route as a full hiking day and plan the rest of your trip accordingly.

Those who prefer an easy circular trail will find the 16.4 km PR3 – No Remanso da Ribeira da Venda. It begins in the centre of Comenda. Also easy and designed as a circular route is the PR4 – Rota dos Moinhos da Ribeira de Margem, at 16.6 km; its start and finish are in Vale de Gaviões. The three routes are similar in length, but differ in their respective starting points and the landscape features reflected in their names.

A shorter alternative is the PR8 – Rota da Sirga. The easy linear trail begins at the Belver Bridge, is 5.8 km long and takes approximately 3 hours. It connects the PR1 – Arribas do Tejo with the PR2 – Corredor Ecológico das Ribeiras de Alferreireira e Barrocas. On the left bank of the Tagus, within the municipality of Gavião, the route follows historic fishermen’s paths and runs alongside sirga walls. These walls were once used to pull boats upstream.

Tagus, Riverside Beach and Nature Observation

Praia Fluvial do Alamal complements the hikes with time by the water. From the Belver Bridge, an accessible path leads along the Tagus to the beach. The area also has an easily accessible, obstacle-free footpath from the surrounding public road, reserved parking spaces for vehicles serving people with disabilities, an accessible path to the bathing area, and paved, continuously accessible paths or boardwalks. Adapted toilets, an accessible first-aid station and a lifeguard are also among the facilities listed.

At Parque de Merendas da Ribeira da Venda, spring water, green areas with dense tree cover and several bridges come together. These include the old Roman bridge over the Ribeira da Venda. In addition to the dam, the park includes a riverside beach area and a children’s pool. For families, a day by the water can be planned differently from one of the longer hikes.

From Observatório de Avifauna do Outeiro, the view stretches far across the Tagus Valley. Birds of prey use the rock formations for nesting. The area includes scrubland, wetlands, rocky areas, as well as agricultural and reforested land. Another viewpoint is Miradouro Tapada da Senhora, which offers a view of Castelo de Belver in the background in a natural setting.

Castles, Museums and Local History

Castelo de Belver has been a national monument since 1910 and is considered one of the most complete examples of medieval military architecture in Portugal. Its origins date back to 1194; it is also regarded as the first castle built in Portugal by the Hospitallers. The original structure has remained almost unchanged. Belver therefore provides a distinctive cultural focus alongside the trails along the Tagus.

Museu do Sabão presents the history of Belver’s former royal soap factory. The museum is housed in a former primary school building that was converted into a museum and also covers the family soap-making tradition that developed from it. Museu de Arte e da Atrelagem de Gavião focuses in particular on horse-drawn vehicles from the 19th and 20th centuries, as well as movable cultural and family heritage of various kinds.

Gavião’s townscape contains further tangible evidence of its history. Coreto de Gavião, on Praça do Município, was built in 1910 and donated by the Patrício family. Bandstands of this kind were used to accommodate music bands during concerts, festivals and religious pilgrimages. Casa da Torre stands out for its Art Nouveau tiles and a tower with a geodetic survey marker. Igreja Matriz de Gavião is dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção and was built in the 17th century by Pedro Nunes Tinoco on behalf of the Priory of Crato.

When choosing your accommodation, you can use your preferred mix of hiking routes, water and culture as a starting point. A trip focused on Belver and the Tagus involves different priorities from days centred on museums and Gavião’s townscape. As an additional cultural event, Mostra de Artesanato, Gastronomia e Atividades Económicas de Gavião usually takes place on the third weekend of July in Jardim do Cruzeiro in Gavião.
