Hiking between Alpalhão and Nisa

Religious architecture makes Alpalhão’s history visible in several individual locations. Capela de São Sebastião dates from the late 16th or early 17th century. Capela do Calvário was built at the end of the 16th century and is considered a rural chapel typical of the Alto Alentejo. Its circular floor plan symbolises the Holy Sepulchre. The Procissão dos Passos passes five Stations of the Cross between Igreja Matriz and Capela do Calvário. Further historical points of interest include Capela de São Pedro, with its 16th-century Mannerist main altar, the Cruzeiro de Alpalhão from the same century, and Igreja Matriz de N. Senhora da Graça, which presumably dates from the early 17th century.

Igreja do Espírito Santo, also known as Igreja da Misericórdia, likewise has a long history: its chancel dates from the late 14th century. Museu da Misericórdia opened on 27 June 2004 and brings together religious objects that had previously been distributed among several buildings. Visits to Casa Museu de Alpalhão are arranged through the Junta de Freguesia de Alpalhão. Casa do Brinquedo complements the cultural offering with more than 200 antique toys made of wire or stone, as well as dolls made of fabric and porcelain.

Traditions and Regional Specialities

Alpalhão can be experienced not only through its buildings, but also through recurring customs and events. On the night of São João, locals traditionally visit Fonte de Baixo, drink “água nova” there and use it to wet the tips of their hair. The spring was built in the mid-18th century, was formerly called Fonte da Arca, was moved to its present location and subsequently equipped with a washhouse. The São Sebastião celebration in Alpalhão includes a procession on the Sunday after 20 January. Nossa Senhora da Redonda is also associated with Easter Monday and Easter Tuesday.

Feira dos Enchidos is one of Alpalhão’s major annual events and promotes local gastronomy and regional traditions.
