The Coleção Emílio Relvas is divided into the thematic areas of everyday life and celebrations, fantastic bestiary, depictions of Christ, and depictions of the Virgin Mary and the saints.

The Catedral de Portalegre was remodelled in the 18th century, as was the cloister. With 96 paintings, it houses the largest collection of Mannerist painting in Portugal. The Castelo de Portalegre provides another historical highlight. It was founded after 1290 by D. Dinis and stands at the highest point in the city. The Torre de Menagem contains a museum area dedicated to the history of Portalegre.

Those interested in literature and regional art can include the Casa-Museu José Régio in their plans. The poet José Régio lived in the house from 1901 to 1969 while working as a teacher in Portalegre; in 1971, the house was converted into a museum. It displays more than 400 images of the crucified Christ, as well as religious and folk art from the region. The Convento de São Bernardo was founded in 1518. The Galeria de São Sebastião is located in the former cloister of the Colégio de São Sebastião.
