The exhibition is divided into four visitor areas: O Atelier do Pintor, O Panorama da Batalha de Atoleiros, A Câmara Obscura and O Laboratório de Fotografia.
The Terreiro da Batalha de Atoleiros is also part of Fronteira’s historical profile and is classified as a National Monument. Historic Townscape and Sacred Architecture
In the town centre, the Arco dos Santos and the Pelourinho de Fronteira recall earlier eras. The Arco dos Santos is a pointed arch from the 14th century and marked one of the former entrances to the fortified town centre. The pillory was erected after King D. Manuel granted Fronteira its town charter in 1512. A square granite tower also reaches a height of 24 metres and creates another striking architectural feature.
The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Atalaia was built in the 16th century at the request of King D. Sebastião and completed in 1599. Its interior has three vaulted naves with five bays, all of equal height. For visitors interested in church architecture and historical details, this building offers a concrete opportunity to appreciate architecture not only through its age but also through its spatial design.
Landscape, Water and a Historic Route
The Centro Ecoturístico da Ribeira Grande complements the cultural sites with a focus on the landscape. It features a granite bridge with ten semicircular arches. The municipality converted the former railway track in Fronteira into the Ecopista Atoleiros–Sulfúrea.
