Discover Pombal: Castle, Culture and Beach

Pombal combines impressive history with a varied landscape. Pombal Castle was built in 1161 by Gualdim Pais, the master of the Order of the Templars. Following its enhancement, a public area with a café, rest areas and paths was created there. The Torre de Menagem houses a museum centre with themed exhibitions; the tower also offers a privileged view of the city.

Those interested in Pombal's history will find numerous tangible traces in the cityscape. The Torre do Relógio Velho displays Manueline features and separated the old district to the east towards the castle from the new district to the west towards the Rio Arunca. In 1509, it received a mechanical clock and a bell. The Igreja Matriz de São Martinho was rebuilt in 1520 and extensively redesigned in 1816 after its destruction by the vandalism of French troops. As early as 1323, D. Dinis and his son D. Afonso took a public oath of peace there, mediated by Saint Queen Isabel. Also worth seeing is the polychrome stone altarpiece from the Renaissance, attributed to the workshop of the French sculptor João de Ruão.

Twentieth-century architecture complements these historic sites. Casa Varela was built in 1924 to a design by the Swiss architect Ernesto Korrodi and opened as the Centro de Experimentação Artística after its redevelopment in 2021. Casa Arte Nova was also built in the 1930s to a design by Korrodi. Green rectangular tiles shape its façade up to the second floor, above which runs a decorative tiled frieze. The Jardim Municipal do Cardal is also home to the Busto do Marquês de Pombal, the first statue of the Marquês de Pombal erected in Portugal, inaugurated in 1907. The Ponte sobre o rio Arunca was built over the Rio Arunca in the 18th century for traffic on the Estrada Real.

Museums, walks and regional traditions

The history of the Museu Marquês de Pombal leads to the former Casa da Câmara, a building erected in 1776 at the behest of the Marquês de Pombal. The museum opened to the public on 8 May 1982 and was moved in 2004 to the Cadeia Velha at Praça Marquês de Pombal. The Museu de Arte Popular Portuguesa houses more than 2,000 items from various regions of Portugal. The educational service of the Museu Marquês de Pombal also offers walks along the Rota Pombalina. This makes it possible to explore the city's history not only through exhibitions, but also on foot.

Religious traditions are also part of the destination's character. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Cardal is traditionally associated with the Festas do Bodo and the annual procession in honour of Nossa Senhora do Cardal, which attracts thousands of worshippers. Fragments of the old Pelourinho de Pombal are kept in the cloisters of the Convento do Cardal; another fragment is said to be set into a wall of Pombal Castle.

Nature, water and excursions

The landscape offers a different pace of travel. The limestone massif of the Serra de Sicó in the Pombal region lies almost entirely within the Sicó/Alvaiázere Natura 2000 site. In the wider regional surroundings of Pombal, the area lies on the Caminhos de Fátima pilgrimage route, which is travelled by thousands of pilgrims every year. Good transport links make it easier to visit the caves and traditional villages of the Serra de Sicó there.

For a day involving water-based activities, the Panorâmico Aquaparque de Pombal comprises six specialised facilities within a tourist complex. Providing a landscape contrast is Praia do Osso da Baleia, a very extensive sandy beach stretching in front of the Mata Nacional do Urso. Those wishing to combine different interests in one trip can include historic walks, nature experiences and a beach visit in their plans. At the 30th edition of the Feira Nacional de Artesanato e Tasquinhas de Pombal, documented in 2025, art, tradition, folk culture and gastronomy were combined. Local and traditional flavours also included Tortulho, a sausage product made with meat and offal that is considered a traditional dish of Vila Cã.

The Pombal area is crossed from north to south by the A1 and A17 motorways, the IC2 (EN1), the EN109 and the northern and western railway lines.
