Pombal’s history can be seen in very different buildings: a 12th-century castle, a Baroque church with a Renaissance altarpiece, and a theatre with an Art Deco façade. There are also themed exhibitions in the Torre de Menagem, along with paths and quiet areas in the public spaces around the Castelo. In the wider region, caves, traditional villages and quiet beaches offer different kinds of excursions. The view thus extends from Pombal’s urban history to nature and water experiences in the region.

Castle and public spaces

The Castelo de Pombal was built in 1161 by Gualdim Pais, Grand Master of the Knights Templar. The Torre de Menagem houses a museum centre with themed exhibitions. This adds a thematic perspective inside the tower to the history of the building itself. The public area around the Castelo includes a café, quiet areas and paths. You can combine your visit with some time to relax or a walk in the surrounding public spaces. Individual facilities may change; check what is currently available before your visit.

Churches, art and urban history

The Igreja Nossa Senhora do Cardal brings together several periods of architectural and art history. Built as a Baroque church in the early 18th century, it was designed by royal architect João Antunes. It also has a Renaissance altarpiece made of Ançã stone, attributed to João de Ruão. This contrast makes the church interesting if, when looking at a building, you pay attention to style, materials and artistic attribution. The remains of the Marquês de Pombal stayed in the church until 1856, connecting it to a specific chapter in the city’s history.

The Teatro-Cine de Pombal adds 20th-century architecture to the picture. It was built between 1938 and 1948 to designs by architects Camilo and Ernesto Korrodi, and has a simple Art Deco façade. As an important part of the city’s sociocultural heritage, it is part of Pombal’s collective memory. In contrast to the castle and Baroque church, the focus here is on a more recent period of construction.

The history of the Museu Marquês de Pombal can also be placed in a timeline: it opened to the public on 8 May 1982 in the Paços do Concelho building. In July 2004, following renovation and adaptation work, it moved to the Cadeia Velha on Praça Marquês de Pombal. These dates mark milestones in the museum’s history, from its opening to its later relocation.

In the wider area around Pombal, the Serra de Sicó has caves and traditional villages that can be visited as excursion destinations. The Mata Nacional do Urso provides access to quiet beaches elsewhere in the region, where various water sports are possible.
