One of the characteristic landscape features is the Fórnea, a pronounced, amphitheatre-shaped incision in a limestone plateau. When rainfall is heavier, its waterfalls emerge from the Cova da Velha. In the Mira-Minde Polje, the largest polje in the region, the dimensions of the karst landscape are particularly clear: the depression is up to 4,000 metres long and no more than 1,800 metres wide. In winter, it can fill with water and form a large lake inhabited by, among others, mallards, moorhens and coots.

The influence of limestone is also evident in the Freguesia of Arrimal. There are three lagoons formed by shallow depressions, where rainwater collects. The Miradouro Jurássico offers a different view of the landscape. It is located in the Parque Natural das Serras de Aire e Candeeiros at an altitude of around 500 metres and offers views of the areas to the north and west of this mountain system. Fifteen limestone blocks represent the most important periods of the Jurassic there.

Hiking, cycling and routes with a history of their own

For hiking, the Concelho of Porto de Mós has a network of 11 signposted and georeferenced main routes for short hikes, as well as several variants. The associated platform offers GPX downloads and the option to report incidents on the routes. This allows you to prepare your tour planning with specific route information. The Bezerra Ecopista, the former Caminho de Ferro da Bezerra, can be used on foot or by bicycle. It offers views of the Serra de Candeeiros and runs partly between stone walls that were cut out of the rock for railway construction.
