Mendiga: Limestone Landscape, Trails and History

The route passes through traditional olive groves as well as small stands of holm oaks and cork oaks, offering expansive views over the Mendiga Valley. History and Visible Signs of Mendiga

One of the most prominent historical traces is the Arco da Memória. It is located in the Freguesia Arrimal-Mendiga in the Serra dos Candeeiros and was built by Cistercian monks towards the end of the 16th century. The arch marked the boundary of lands that had been donated in the 12th century to Portugal’s first king, D. Afonso Henriques. Its history gives the visit a temporal depth that reaches beyond the present-day landscape.

Mendiga’s present-day parish church is also part of the townscape. It was inaugurated in 1968, is dedicated to Saint Julian and is located in the town centre. The Moinhos da Mendiga can also be found on the heights of Mendiga. Together with the traditional extraction of natural stone, they add further facets to the character of the place. Mendiga is particularly known for its white paving, “calçada branca”, which is used worldwide.
