The permanent exhibition Veículos de Tração Animal also presents traditional animal-drawn vehicles adapted for leisure, travel and work.

In the historic centre, a walking tour leads through the streets and squares of São Brás de Alportel and thus through the town’s urban development. The Casa Memória da EN2 is located at Largo de São Sebastião, at the intersection of Estrada Regional 270 and Estrada Nacional 2. Another highlight is the Museu do Traje de São Brás de Alportel, which occupies an area of 5,000 m². It is housed in a manor house from the late 19th century, surrounded by former domestic, agricultural and water-related infrastructure. The building preserves an example of Algarve rural architecture with Neo-Arabic lines and horseshoe-arched doors.

Festivals, churches and special buildings

The Festa das Tochas Floridas takes place every Easter Sunday in São Brás de Alportel. During the procession celebrating the Resurrection of Christ, men carry flower-decorated torches in two rows. The festival tradition also includes the Encontro de Sons e Sabores in the square in front of the Igreja Matriz in the afternoon from 3:00 p.m. onwards. Music and poetry are on the programme there, along with the awarding of prizes for traditional and artistically decorated torches and blankets. A second regular event is the Feira da Serra, which takes place every year on the last weekend of July.

The Igreja Matriz has a longitudinal floor plan with three naves and five bays. Its notable features include an 18th-century Baroque baptismal font and a marble altarpiece considered unique in the Algarve. Nearby, the Porta da Zona Rural do Palácio Episcopal recalls the town’s history with its triangular pediment and an inscription dating from 1903. The Palácio Episcopal was built between the 17th and 18th centuries for the bishops of the Algarve. The garden in the historic centre is next to the municipal outdoor swimming pools and forms part of the former bishop’s palace, which served as the bishops’ summer residence.

Rural trails, cycling routes and regional specialities

For a more active day, the Várzea da Cova trail, part of the 28-kilometre circular route Passeio Pedestre no Vale, passes through rural areas with a pronounced microclimate. Those who prefer to travel by bike will find a 20-kilometre mountain-bike route starting from São Brás de Alportel. The BTT route leads through mountainous landscapes with sudden descents and steep climbs.
