Discover Faro: Vila-Adentro, Culture and Ria Formosa
Faro combines historical discoveries with the protected nature of the Ria Formosa. Those planning a trip that combines city history, theatre, science and boat trips will find a range of experiences here for varied days on holiday. When choosing your holiday apartment or holiday home, it is worth first deciding what you want to focus on: Should the trip be primarily shaped by culture, or should nature observation and maritime activities be part of it too?
Historic Faro around Vila-Adentro
A distinctive gateway to the city's history is the Arco da Vila. It leads into Faro's old town, known as “Vila-Adentro”. The Arco da Vila also contains an Arab gate dating from the 11th century. This means that different periods of the city's history come together in a single historic structure.
Faro Cathedral also reflects this transformation. It was built in 1251 after the Christian reconquest on the site of an earlier mosque. A visit of 45 to 90 minutes is recommended. The bell tower offers panoramic views over Faro and the Ria Formosa, adding a broad perspective on the city and natural area to the historical tour.
Other distinctive buildings contribute to Faro's cultural character: The imposing façade and the two bell towers of Igreja do Carmo shape the cityscape. Its final bell tower was completed in 1807. The Museu Municipal de Faro is housed in the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Assunção; the Renaissance cloister of this convent has two levels. Faro's Jewish Cemetery is the only surviving testimony to the wealthy Jewish community that settled there at the beginning of the 19th century.
Theatre, Science and Special Stories of the City
Teatro Lethes opened as a theatre in 1845 and is located in the former Colégio de Santiago Maior. Performances created by ACTA are also presented there. The Companhia de Teatro do Algarve – ACTA was established as the resident theatre company at Teatro Lethes. There is also a special historical connection to media history: The first screening of an animatograph in Faro took place at Teatro Lethes on 11 September 1898.
For an outing with children or for curious travellers of any age, the Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve is an excellent option. It is dedicated to science communication and caters to visitors of all ages. This allows a cultural programme in Faro to be complemented by a visit with a different focus, without the entire holiday having to revolve around a single activity.
Ria Formosa and Maritime Experiences
The Ria Formosa, which includes Faro, is protected as a nature park. This protection status was granted on 9 December 1987 by Decree-Law No. 373/87. Faro is a starting point for maritime tourism activities in the Ria Formosa. During boat trips through its channels, you can observe white-cheeked coots, diving ducks, black-winged stilts, wading birds and crested larks.
Formosamar organises boat trips as well as ecotourism and adventure activities in the Ria Formosa Nature Park and along the Algarve coast. Formosamar also offers guided kayak tours departing from Faro. This allows you to choose between a historical city tour, more peaceful nature observation and a more active excursion when planning your trip.
Faro as a Starting Point for Planning Your Trip
Faro International Airport is located approximately 4 kilometres from Faro city centre. This approximate distance provides a specific point of reference for planning your journey. When looking for accommodation, you can then consider which of the experiences mentioned should take up the most space in your holiday. Travellers who are particularly interested in Vila-Adentro, the cathedral, museums and Teatro Lethes will make a different choice than those who mainly want to plan boat trips, kayak tours and nature observation.
