In the old town, the walls of the medina recall the 12th and 13th centuries. São Clemente Church is a Gothic church from the 13th century whose architecture was altered in the 16th century. Notable features include the pointed-arch portal, a Gothic side door and the Baroque-decorated bell tower. The square tower of the castle was originally the minaret of the main mosque of al-Ulya and was later converted into the bell tower of São Clemente Church.

Advance registration with the Municipal Archaeological Museum is required for guided tours of the castle and the town walls. Using objects, the Town Museum presents the history of the municipality from prehistoric times to the modern era. In the “Traditional Cuisine” section, you can also learn about the kitchens of homes in the Algarve mountain region and along the edge of the highlands up to the middle of the 20th century. The Islamic baths within the walled area probably date from the 12th century; the Banhos Islâmicos bathhouse is believed to have continued operating even after the Christian conquest.

Trails at Fonte Benémola and Rocha da Pena

Fonte Benémola offers a landscape that fits well into a travel itinerary as a destination in its own right. Its springs keep the flow of the Fonte Menalva stream going even during the summer. The PR16 LLE trail starts and ends at the Fica Bem trailhead. One section runs jointly with the Via Algarviana, while another shares its route with the Sete Fontes PR12LLE hiking trail. Another option is Rocha da Pena, a locally protected landscape in the Algarvensis Geopark. Its plateau reaches an altitude of around 480 metres, and the approximately 2-kilometre-long rocky escarpment consists of Lower Jurassic limestone. The trail at Rocha da Pena is designated PR18 LLE and is officially approved. In the Fonte Benémola area, a craftsman near O Olho still works with reeds. He uses them to make baskets, cups and other items for household and agricultural use. Loulé’s long-standing agricultural and handicraft traditions also include almonds, figs and handcrafted products. Folhados, Carriços, fig desserts, almond confectionery and D. Rodrigos are associated with Café Calcinha. The café opened in Loulé on 5 June 1929 and is associated with the poet António Aleixo.

Querença also demonstrates the connection between festivals and regional cuisine: folk and religious celebrations become gastronomic festivals where, among other things, Chouriças, honey and Easter Folares can be sampled. The places of Alte, Salir and Querença are located in the Algarvensis Geopark and are destinations on routes through the interior of the Algarve, including the Via Algarviana and the EN124. Loulé’s carnival celebrations are considered among the best known in Portugal.
