Alte combines a distinctive village setting with a landscape that belongs to both the Barrocal and the Serra. Whitewashed houses, painted windows and façades, and intricately decorated chimneys shape the village’s historic streets. Traditional paved paths and cobbled streets, courtyards, and flower boxes planted with geraniums complete the picture. Visitors who want to discover village culture and landscape on holiday will find several points of interest here: craftsmanship, historic buildings, and routes that begin or end in Alte.

Streets, Craftsmanship and History

A village tour of Alte can include visits to ceramic and copper artisans; the availability of individual artisans may vary. At Casa da Memória d’Alte, visitors can discover crafts that skilled artisans still practise in Alte today. This offers a chance to appreciate traditional craftsmanship not only as part of the streetscape, but also as a living practice in the village.

The Polo Museológico Cândido Guerreiro e Condes de Alte lies among the houses that climb the hillside above the Ribeira de Alte and overlooks the Ribeira. The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Assunção (Alte) is also part of the village’s historic sights: it is said to have been founded at the end of the 13th century and dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção by Dona Bona. Together, the museum, church, and streets offer different perspectives on the village’s history and character.

Barrocal, Serra and Water

Alte’s landscape includes Barrocal and Serra areas and has a distinctly Mediterranean character. One notable natural feature is the connection between the spring and the waterfall: Fonte Grande de Alte is next to a spring that flows all year round. The stream that feeds Cascata Queda do Vigário takes in water from Fonte Grande and passes Fonte Pequena before reaching the waterfall. The springs and Cascata can therefore be seen as parts of the same watercourse.

Trails and Local Produce

The hiking trails have different reference points. The PR15 LLE “Between the Barrocal and the Mountains” trail begins and ends in the village of Alte. Stage 8 of the Via Algarviana runs from Alte to São Bartolomeu de Messines. One trail starts and finishes in the village, while the other follows the stated route from Alte to another named place. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Local produce from Alte includes medronho brandy, honey, and confectionery. These add a culinary dimension to the impressions of architecture, craftsmanship, and landscape. When choosing a holiday apartment in Alte, it helps to decide first what you would like to focus on during your stay: would you rather explore the historic streets, craftsmanship, and architectural heritage, or focus on trails and landscapes? Compare the exact location of your accommodation with the places and activities you plan to include in your itinerary.
