Tavira between the Ria Formosa, beaches and culture

Tavira combines coastal landscapes, nature experiences and an unusually diverse cultural heritage. More than 18 km of coastline belong to the area, including the dune barrier of the islands of Tavira and Cabanas. At the same time, the landscape is divided into the Serra, Barrocal and coast. The Perímetro Florestal da Conceição de Tavira covers 457 ha. In the Vale da Assêca area, streams and waterfalls lie between the mountains and the coast. Tavira also has an extensive network of paths for walking or cycling. More than 90 percent of the Via Algarviana can be travelled by mountain bike. Shorter excursion options are complemented by the 3.8 km-long “Anta da Masmorra” audio trail, which is integrated into the Via Algarviana.

Beaches with a history of their own

Praia do Barril is more than just a coastal destination. It preserves the original buildings and the anchor cemetery of a former tuna fishing facility. The maritime heritage of Santa Luzia also includes the preserved tuna fishing village of Arraial Ferreira Neto at Praia do Barril, which dates back to 1842. A footbridge leads from Santa Luzia across the Ria Formosa; this is followed by a route of approximately 1 km on foot or by tourist train to the beach. Praia do Barril has been adapted for visitors with reduced mobility.

Praia da Ilha de Tavira can be reached from Tavira via Rua José Pires Padinha, from the Quatro Águas quay or by water taxi. Windsurfing and sailing are possible at Praia de Cabanas.

Tavira's cultural side

At the Palácio da Galeria, the central museum area of the Museu Municipal de Tavira, exhibitions tell the story of the history and cultural heritage of the municipality of Tavira. Archaeological investigations in the courtyard uncovered several wells carved into the rock, which were interpreted as Phoenician ritual wells from the 7th or 6th century BC and dedicated to the cult of Baal, the god of storms.

The Núcleo Museológico Islâmico displays the Vaso de Tavira as well as other archaeological objects from the Islamic period. These include a capital from the Caliphate period, an inkwell, ablution basins, an Islamic wall from the 12th century and a tower. The Igreja da Misericórdia was built in the 16th century by master stonemason André Pilarte and is considered one of the most remarkable Renaissance buildings in the Algarve. Castelo de Tavira stands on the summit of the Santa Maria hill and offers wide views over the city, the River Gilão, the Ria Formosa and the sea. It was declared a national monument in 1939.
