Portimão: Beach, Lagoon and Culture

Portimão lies at the estuary of the Arade River and combines a distinctive coastal landscape with history, culture and maritime tradition. Praia da Rocha is an approximately 3-kilometre-long sandy beach whose appearance is shaped by rock formations carved out by the sea. Between the Beach, Lagoon and Rural Landscape

For walks and landscape experiences, the P1 circular route “A Rocha Delicada” offers a varied setting. It leads through Quinta da Rocha, a peninsula bounded by the Ribeira de Odiáxere and the Alvor River. The landscape includes agricultural areas, Mediterranean scrubland, marshland, former salt pans, fish-farming facilities and the Alvor lagoon ecosystem. The lagoon provides a habitat for numerous bird species, including flamingos.

The P3 circular route “Varandas sobre o Mar” follows the upper edge of a rocky coastal cliff made of Miocene limestone. P4 “Viagem Interior” offers a different perspective, with citrus orchards, almond groves and carob trees. This makes it possible to take different landscape impressions into account when planning a trip: coastal cliffs, lagoon or a rural setting. Praia da Rocha also has facilities for basketball, football, volleyball and aerobics.

Discovering Portimão through History and Culture

At the Museu de Portimão, the permanent exhibition “Portimão, Território e Identidade” tells the local history from prehistoric times to the present day. The museum is housed in a renovated former factory building dating from the late 19th century. The city’s long fishing tradition developed particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries with the rise of the canning industry and tourism.

Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes also combines local history and culture. Manuel Teixeira Gomes, known as an important politician and writer, was born in this 19th-century building. The Casa can host recitals, presentations and workshops. Those interested in even earlier history can find the Monumentos Megalíticos de Alcalar in Alcalar, designated as a national monument.

Marina, Excursions and Regional Flavours

Portimão has a marina and a cruise port, making arrival by sea possible. The municipal bus route “Vai e Vem” connects various parts of Portimão with the beaches. AlgarExperience offers dolphin-watching, brunch on board and parasailing, and operates from Portimão as well as from the marinas in Albufeira, Vilamoura and Lagos. For motorsport enthusiasts, the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve complex includes a racetrack, a karting track and an off-road track.

Grilled sardines are particularly well known in Portimão and add a culinary tradition to the destination’s maritime character.
