Alvito: Culture, Frescoes and Paths in the Alentejo Plain
Alvito is situated on elevated ground in the Alentejo Plain and offers expansive views. The town combines a distinctive architectural history with rural paths, olive groves, frescoes and religious traditions. Walking Routes with Different Day Formats
The PR2 Memórias dos Moinhos de Alvito circular walking route is 15.4 kilometres long and takes approximately four to five hours. It follows rural paths and is therefore suitable as a longer stage for anyone planning an extended day of walking. The PR3 Rota de Santa Luzia is shorter, at 6.3 kilometres, and takes approximately two hours. This circular route also follows rural paths.
The PR3 starts and ends at the Ermida de São Sebastião in the Rossio de Alvito. The route passes through centuries-old olive groves to the Capela de Santa Luzia. This makes it possible to combine a walk with specific landscape and cultural experiences, without confusing the two routes in terms of their length. The Ermida de São Sebastião has the form, typical of the Alentejo, of a fortified temple with Manueline-Mudéjar features. It was probably built towards the end of the 15th century.
Castle, Churches and Frescoes
The Castelo de Alvito is a fortified palace with a rectangular layout and an inner courtyard. Since its inauguration in 1993, it has been converted into a Pousada de Portugal. Opposite the Torre da Fonte of the castle, the Pelourinho de Alvito stands in the Praça da República. Its finial displays a Manueline style.
The religious buildings also give Alvito its distinctive character. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, the parish church of Alvito, was built from the ground up towards the end of the 13th century. Its exterior façade features elements of Mudéjar architecture. The Capela das Almas is decorated with frescoes painted by José de Escobar in 1603. Some of the white houses in Alvito have door frames in the Manueline style.
The Rota do Fresco includes visits to frescoes in Alvito, Cuba, Portel, Vidigueira and Viana do Alentejo. It thus offers a thematic approach that extends beyond individual buildings in the town. The Rota do Fresco is also available to people with reduced mobility.
Festivals and Activities Throughout the Year
Religious traditions shape several dates in the calendar. The Festa de Nossa Senhora da Assunção takes place every year on the last weekend of August and honours the patron saint of Alvito. The Procissão do Senhor Jesus dos Passos takes place every year on the fourth Sunday of Lent. On Good Friday, the Procissão do Senhor Morto takes place; it is considered one of Alvito’s most solemn processions.
On 1 November, Alvito hosts the Feira dos Santos, also known as the Feira dos Frutos Secos. During the summer months, the Piscinas Municipais de Alvito are a municipal leisure and recreation facility for visitors. Alvito’s tourist office is located at Rua dos Lobos 13, 7920-022 Alvito.
