Ourique: Archaeology, Festivals and Alentejo Culture

Ourique lies between the Alentejo plain and the Serra Algarvia. The area is crossed by the Mira and Sado rivers and tells the story of a long settlement history: agropastoral communities have lived here since the Neolithic period. Archaeology between the Bronze Age and the Middle Ages

One particularly impressive highlight is the Cola Archaeological Circuit. It preserves evidence of the lives and deaths of earlier communities. This includes Castro da Cola, which has been classified as a national monument since 1910. The fortified settlement is documented as having been inhabited from the Bronze Age until the late Middle Ages. Today, Castro da Cola stands on a hill beside the Ribeira de Marchicão, near the Mira River.

The archaeological sites along the circuit were shaped, among other factors, by their proximity to the Mira River and by mineral deposits exposed at the surface. These were exploited from the Chalcolithic period until probably the Middle Ages. Individual burial monuments also reveal the region’s chronological depth: Fernão Vaz 1 is a communal burial site from the 4th millennium BC and was created during the fully developed Neolithic period. Nora Velha 1 is a Chalcolithic tholos tomb monument with a circular interior measuring 3.5 metres in diameter.

Important information for visiting archaeological sites

The Atalaia archaeological site consists of six areas and forms a multi-part necropolis that was used from the Bronze Age to the Iron Age. It is not accessible to wheelchair users or visitors with pushchairs; no guided tours are offered on site. Ourique’s religious traditions also broaden the archaeological perspective by connecting it with the living present. The Romaria de Nossa Senhora da Cola combines religious devotion with singing, merriment and sociable toasts. It usually takes place on 7 and 8 September at the Santuário da Cola in Ourique. The Festas de Santa Maria are among the oldest and most popular expressions of faith in Ourique. Hundreds of people take part in a procession through the town’s streets.

Another religious tradition is the Procissão do Enterro do Senhor. It begins at the Santa Maria Church, the parish church, and passes through the main streets of Ourique. Such dates give a trip a special cultural framework, but should be included in the planning as specific events.

For an evening of culture, the Cine-Teatro Sousa Telles is a good choice. The building was inaugurated in 1899 and offers a regular current cinema programme as well as other culturally significant events. Its first programme of activities focused on extensive material from the votive deposit of Garvão dating from the Second Iron Age.
