Ferreira Do Alentejo combines the cultural history of the Alentejo with tranquil landscapes, regional traditions and special places for observing nature. Culture and history in the town centre

The Museu Municipal de Ferreira do Alentejo is a good starting point for learning about the history of the Município. It collects, preserves, researches, communicates and presents tangible and intangible heritage. The six exhibition units focus, among other things, on archaeology, sacred art, wine and Cante, the municipal archive and traditional arts. The museum also houses a polyptych painting from the 16th century, which visitors can view.

The museum's opening hours are particularly useful when planning your day: from Tuesday to Friday, it is open from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 14:30 to 18:30, and at weekends from 10:00 to 13:00. The Núcleo Sede has rooms for temporary and thematic exhibitions, an educational service and a laboratory. This makes it possible to arrange a stay with several cultural perspectives without being limited to a single collection.

Sacred art also leads far back into the past. The Núcleo de Arte Sacra focuses on the religious and spiritual activities of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Ferreira do Alentejo since 1516. It is located in the Igreja da Misericórdia, whose portal adopts the Manueline style and features stone motifs such as pine cones, anthropomorphic figures and cord ornaments. The church's main altarpiece consists of six panels and was created around 1570 by António Nogueira from Évora. The Igreja Matriz, also known as Nossa Senhora da Assunção, is already mentioned in documents from the 14th century.

Archaeology, Cante and craft traditions

Another cultural highlight is the Estação Arqueológica do Monte da Chaminé. The agriculturally oriented Roman villa was inhabited from the 1st to the 6th century AD. Archaeological excavations uncovered an agriculturally used basement there. In Ferreira Do Alentejo, living craft traditions are also part of the townscape: traditional blacksmithing continues to be practised in Armindo Fragoso's workshop, and traditional Alentejo furniture has a history of more than eight decades.

The Casa do Vinho e do Cante is located in the former Taberna do Zé Lelito. It preserves the memory of traditional taverns in the Alentejo, talha wine and Cante Alentejano. The song “O menino” is particularly sung in Peroguarda. Those wishing to discover regional culture through music, places and crafts therefore have several different ways to do so.

Lakes, waterbirds and landscapes

There are several different destinations for observing nature and experiencing the landscape. The Albufeira de Odivelas is an important gathering place for various waterbirds. At the Lagoa dos Patos, located on the border between the municipalities of Ferreira do Alentejo and Alvito, flocks of ducks, herons, spoonbills, flamingos, white-cheeked cormorants, dunlins and stilts can be seen. The Zona Ribeirinha de Santa Margarida do Sado is a green area from which the landscapes of the River Sado can be viewed.

There are also opportunities within Ferreira Do Alentejo to make a day trip varied. The Parque de Lazer da Fonte Nova has a picnic area and two fitness circuits for pedestrians equipped with suitable equipment. Travelling along the Estrada Nacional 2

In the municipality of Ferreira do Alentejo, the Estrada Nacional 2 passes through the towns of Ferreira do Alentejo and Odivelas. The entire route connects Chaves and Faro over 738 km and is used by cyclists, motorcyclists, coaches and motorists. Ferreira Do Alentejo is therefore suitable as a destination for different ways of travelling, without this implying any particular length of stay.

Guided visits to Herdade do Marmelo explain the entire olive oil production process and end with a tasting. Another guided tour combines Vila de Ferreira do Alentejo by bus and on foot with the Lagar de Azeite Alentejano Oliveira da Serra and Herdade do Pinheiro; the programme also includes a tasting of seedless grapes.
