Odemira is a destination for travellers who would like to include longer distances on foot or by bicycle in their plans. The Caminho Histórico comprises 13 stages and is 263 kilometres long. In February 2016, it received the European certification “Leading Quality Trails – Best of Europe”. The Trilho dos Pescadores also comprises 13 stages and covers 226.5 kilometres. It follows paths traditionally used by local people as access routes to beaches and fishing grounds.

The Trilho dos Pescadores is an exclusively hiking single trail along cliffs, with plenty of sand and wind. This gives it a distinctly different character from the longer-stage route of the Caminho Histórico. For bicycles, the Parque Ribeirinho in Odemira is home to the Centro Cyclin’Portugal de Odemira, a network of five cycling stations accessible to everyone. The mountain biking/gravel trail network covers more than 1,000 kilometres, 38 organised routes and four levels of difficulty. The 144.5-kilometre Grande Travessia connects the access points of this centre. In Odemira, nine of the 24 circular routes connected to the Rota Vicentina are also designated; the entire circular-route network between Santiago do Cacém and Lagos covers 263 kilometres.

River, Coast and Regional Experiences

The Mira River is navigable from Odemira to its mouth at Vila Nova de Milfontes over a distance of approximately 30 kilometres. The Estação Náutica de Odemira comprises three nautical centres along the river: in Vila Nova de Milfontes, in Odemira and at the Santa Clara Reservoir. The Igreja da Misericórdia was built in the second half of the 16th century. The Mannerist religious building combines rectangular and oval forms in an unusual way. The Igreja de Santa Maria is the former Igreja de Santo António and belongs to a Franciscan monastery founded in the 16th century. The Igreja de Santa Clara de Assis dates from the first half of the 16th century; its gilded and polychrome altarpieces were created in the 18th century.

Cultural, recreational, educational, sporting, social and civic events take place annually in Odemira, including Abril em Odemira, FEI-TUR, Festival Tassjazz, FACECO and Brisas do Atlântico. Nossa Senhora da Piedade is the patron saint of the municipality and is widely venerated by the local population. The annual pilgrimage takes place on 7 and 8 September. In addition, the Moinho de Vento de Odemira has been in operation since the municipality’s restoration work in 1989 and 1997; Espaço CRIAR regularly organises projects, workshops and exhibitions.
