Odemira on the Mira: Nature, Trails and Historic Churches
Odemira is situated on a small, amphitheatre-shaped hill. The white houses face the Mira River and, together with the watercourse, shape the character of the town. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Odemira can combine different travel ideas here: walks along the river, longer routes through the landscape, architecture and historic sites.
River landscape and trails along the Mira
The Jardim Ribeirinho do Mira is an extensive green space on the banks of the Mira River. It forms part of the riverside path along the Mira, which is connected to the ecosystems of the riverbanks. This gives Odemira a specific starting point for anyone who likes to spend their days outdoors while experiencing the river as a recurring landscape theme.
For planning longer stages, the Caminho Histórico of the Rota Vicentina is an interesting option. The historic trail includes a 33-kilometre connecting route between Sabóia and Odemira. One individual stage leads from Odemira to S. Teotónio along the Mira River and the Ribeira de S. Teotónio. The stage from Odemira to S. Teotónio is wide throughout and has only a slight incline. When choosing your accommodation, you can therefore consider whether you want to focus your stay primarily on a longer route or on shorter excursions with other focal points.
There is also a clearly designated service point for cycling travellers: the Centro de BTT in Odemira has a bicycle-washing and repair station as well as a drinking-water supply. The Estação Náutica de Odemira comprises three nautical centres in the Município de Odemira: the Polo Náutico de Vila Nova de Milfontes, the Pólo Náutico de Odemira and the Pólo Náutico da Albufeira de Santa Clara.
Discover architecture and history
Odemira can also be explored through its religious and public buildings. The Igreja da Misericórdia is a Mannerist religious building whose design is notable for the relationship between rectangular and oval forms. It was built in the second half of the 16th century. The Igreja de Santa Maria, formerly Igreja de S. António, belonged to a Franciscan monastery founded in the 16th century. As a Mannerist church, it has the simple character typical of Franciscan churches in the Baixo Alentejo.
The Igreja de S. Pedro and the Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Piedade also form part of the historic orientation. The Igreja de S. Pedro was built at the end of the 15th century and is considered an example of rural Manueline architecture in the southwest of the Alentejo. The annual Feira Anual de S. Pedro takes place around the church on 1 November and attracts numerous visitors. The present Ermida de Nossa Senhora da Piedade was built at the end of the 19th century on a nearby hill after floods had affected the former church. In the late Middle Ages, the site was a famous pilgrimage centre associated with miracles attributed to the Virgin Mary. A well-known Cantiga de Santa Maria by Afonso X the Wise, whose reign lasted from 1252 to 1284, is dedicated to the Ermida.
Squares, views and further travel ideas
The Fontanário da Praça Sousa Prado was built in the 19th century and combines public civic architecture with Baroque and Rococo-inspired design elements. The Paços do Concelho probably date from the 18th century, were extensively remodelled in 1865 and received a bell tower in 1901. The Jardim da Fonte Férrea contains a spring with iron-rich water, which gives the garden its name. Cerro do Peguinho offers a panoramic view for an overview of the river and townscape.
Which accommodation suits your trip therefore depends above all on the desired mix: the Mira and its riverside paths favour a landscape-focused stay, the Caminho Histórico an active stage-based itinerary, and the buildings days with a cultural focus. Other places for your research include Boavista dos Pinheiros, Vila Nova De Milfontes, São Martinho Das Amoreiras, Nascedios, Malhão, Zambujeira do Mar, Bicos and Longueira.
