Podewils Castle and its architectural history

The castle was built in the early 15th century by the Podewils family as a former knight’s residence. In 1580, it was demolished down to its foundations and rebuilt in the Renaissance style. The building acquired its final form at the end of the 19th century. The year 1580 therefore marks a major turning point in its architectural history; its final form belongs to a later period. Before the war, the castle was called the “Flower Castle” because of its beautiful flower gardens—a historical nickname that recalls the gardens of that time.

A 16th-century chapel with Baroque furnishings also survives in the castle park. The castle and chapel thus bring together different historical and stylistic themes, although they were not built in the same period.

Church of the Annunciation: Renaissance and Baroque

The single-nave, masonry Church of the Annunciation was built in 1580 by the owners of the nearby castle in a Baroque-Renaissance style. Its older section retains rich Renaissance furnishings, including an altar, pulpit, baptismal font and patron’s pew. The furnishings also make the church interesting to travellers who would like to include sacred architecture and decorative elements in their explorations alongside the history of the castle.

A burial chapel was added to the east side of the church in 1700. It contains original Baroque sarcophagi belonging to the founders, Heinrich von Podewils, who died in 1696, and Adam von Podewils, who died in 1697. The materials also differ: Heinrich’s sarcophagus is made of brass, while Adam’s is made of marble and decorated with sculptures. In Krąg, Renaissance furnishings and Baroque tombs can thus be encountered in their respective historical contexts.

Historic park and Jezioro Zamkowe

The castle is surrounded by a 2.6-hectare historic park. The park extends to the road and the shore of Jezioro Zamkowe, which lies north of the castle and is almost circular. The 16th-century chapel also stands in the park. Noticeable pedestrian activity can be seen around Jezioro Zamkowe. If you are choosing a holiday destination and would like to take in lakeside and parkland scenery as well as historic buildings, this offers another specific focus for your trip.

Designated trails in and around Krąg

The approximately 113-kilometre Captain Marek Roszczynialski riding trail passes through Krąg. It connects Biały Bór, Drzewiany, Krąg, Polanów, Staniewice and Jarosławiec. There is also a designated riding trail in the area around Krąg and Komorowo. For travellers interested in horse riding, both Krąg itself and the surrounding area are therefore points of reference.

A designated tourist trail connects Wielin, Buszyno, Krąg and Borkowo in the municipality of Malechowo. Well-maintained nature trails offer another way to experience the area. They begin directly behind the buildings of Podewils Castle Hotel in Krąg and lead to a second, entirely natural forest lake. The information describes different trails and destinations; they should not be combined into a single route.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Krąg, these highlights can help you choose a destination: the castle and church lend themselves to a stay focused on cultural history, the park and lake add to the character of the area, and the designated trails offer opportunities for outdoor activities. Which of these aspects matters most for your trip depends on whether you mainly want to explore architectural history, scenery or trails in the surrounding area.
