Castle and museum: history from the beginning to the present

Since 5 July 2019, the Muzeum Mazurskie in Szczytno has had a permanent exhibition on the history of the town and its surroundings. It spans the period from prehistory to the present day. Its focus is therefore not limited to a single era: those interested in the town’s development will find a historical perspective that covers different periods.

The ruins of the Teutonic Order castle are also part of this cultural focus. The modernised ruins were presented as a new tourist attraction in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship. Visitors can operate multimedia devices themselves and access personalised information. The experience is also adapted to the habits and perception of young people—a practical approach that can accommodate different interests during a shared visit.

The castle’s north wing has rooms on two levels for vernissages and permanent or temporary exhibitions. The subject matter covers history and contemporary local art. The exhibition rooms are designed for year-round use. Szczytno’s tourist information centre is located in the castle’s exhibition hall, which is also intended for year-round use.

Walking between the lakes

The yellow-marked Mazursko–Kurpiowski Trail starts at the Muzeum Mazurskie by the castle ruins and crosses a bridge over the causeway between Lake Domowe Duże and Lake Domowe Małe in Szczytno. This makes it possible to combine an interest in the town’s history with a walk, without limiting the route to a single theme. If you like to vary your days, you can consider both culture and outdoor activity during your stay.

The historic Chata Mazurska, dating from the mid-19th century, is located along the trail. Its place in the town’s history differs from the museum exhibition’s broad time span: here, you encounter a building from a specific historical period, while the museum covers the history of Szczytno and its surroundings from prehistory to the present day.

Lake Domowe Małe covers an area of 11.4 hectares and is close to the town centre. When choosing a holiday apartment, it may therefore be helpful to first consider whether you want to focus your stay more on the town centre, cultural attractions or the walking trail. The lake and the route offer different starting points for planning your trip.

Cultural attractions and town festival

In the centre is a park named after musician Krzysztof Klenczon. It features a monument to him and a fountain. This place adds another connection to the town and to a musical figure alongside the castle and museum themes.

Festiwal Dni i Noce Szczytna is an annual town festival. If a festival taking place during your preferred travel dates matters to you, you can make it a focus of your plans. Together with the museum, the castle ruins, the park and the walking trail, it offers various ways to get to know Szczytno; however, this does not mean that the places form a single walking route.
