Lakes and city history in Szczytno
Domowe Duże, also called Długie, and Domowe Małe are in the centre of Szczytno. Domowe Duże covers 51 hectares and is connected to Domowe Małe. Near the centre, a park surrounds the shore of Domowe Małe, with a fountain in the middle of the park. The two central lakes and a green lakeside setting are therefore useful landmarks in the city.
The ruins of the castle in Szczytno also offer a way to explore the city’s history and regional themes. They have multimedia devices that visitors can operate themselves. The devices provide information about the city, the castle and the region, allowing visitors to choose what to learn about according to their own interests rather than follow just one topic.
A tourism description updated in 2016 mentions a sandy city beach and a beach volleyball court at the lakes in Szczytno. It also locates an illuminated pier with benches and tables at the eastern end of the lakeshore, as well as a boat landing at the beach. Check the current condition of the facilities before visiting. A tourism description from 2016 also lists seasonal rentals of pedal boats, kayaks and sailboats at a sports centre by the lake. Forests and seasonal nature
Sasek Wielki is the largest lake in Szczycieński County. Its elongated, channel-like shape and the wooded hills around it give it a different landscape from the central city lakes. The county’s forests also offer different attractions depending on the season: in summer, there are shady areas and access to forest waters; in autumn, mushroom pickers come from across the country; and in winter, the forests become cross-country skiing trails. The season thus shifts the focus between forest waters, mushroom picking and cross-country skiing.
There are hundreds of kilometres of prepared trails in the county’s forests. Hikers can find forest nature trails in the Szczytno, Korpele, Jedwabno and Spychowo forest districts. Check locally whether the nature trails are open; paths may change over time.
Rivers and routes in the county
The rivers also differ in character. The first calm stretches of the Krutynia meander along the eastern edge of Szczycieński County, including around Spychowo. The Sawica kayak route, by contrast, is considered difficult because of numerous obstacles, particularly fallen trees, stronger currents and many bends. Water conditions can vary, so check the latest conditions before kayaking.
The Omulew kayak route begins at Lake Omulew in Nidzica Municipality, passes through Jedwabno Municipality and then crosses the boundary into Wielbark Municipality. Its starting point is outside the county. This sequence matters if you want to focus on the stretches within the county when planning your trip.
For cyclists, the Szczytno–Dźwierzuty–Biskupiec section offers a specific point of comparison: it is about 42 kilometres long and paved, but extends beyond the county. In the county, the “Rowerem po kolei” cycling route follows the former railway line No. 262. The length and surface are specified for the first route, while the second follows a historic railway line. Check the current route and conditions before setting off.
This distinction makes choosing a location for a holiday apartment more straightforward: Szczytno focuses on city lakes and the castle, while forest outings or route plans can be based around specific stretches in the county.
