Castles, a fortified church and fortress history
Krasiczyn Castle dates from the 16th century and is considered one of Poland’s most valuable architectural monuments. A 9-hectare park surrounds the castle. The building’s history and the park are two distinct aspects of this destination: the castle itself takes centre stage, as does the extensive green space around it.
The church in Posada Rybotycka is another example of historic architecture. It is Poland’s oldest brick fortified church and dates from the 15th century. Fragments of 17th-century polychrome decoration have been preserved inside. Those interested in historic religious buildings and their interiors will find a different focus here than at Krasiczyn Castle.
Przemyśl Fortress also shapes the region’s history. It is one of Europe’s largest modern-era fortresses and a historical and tourist attraction for visitors to the Przemyśl region as well as local residents. The right-bank fortress trail offers a different way to explore the forts: it follows rural and wooded paths to some particularly interesting forts and is 28 km long in total.
Trails through varied landscapes
There are hiking routes of different lengths and layouts to choose from. The red trail starts in Przemyśl and crosses the hills of the Pogórze Przemyskie. It is 39 km long within the Pogórze Przemyskie Landscape Park. The blue trail is 74 km long, runs mostly through woodland and follows the San River for a short section.
The Pogórze Przemyskie Landscape Park covers 61,862 hectares and extends across several municipalities in Przemyśl County. Each nature reserve focuses on specific landscapes and habitats. Reberce protects remnants of an ancient Carpathian forest near Wola Korzeniecka, Kraja and Łomna across 190.96 hectares. In the Krępak area near Korzeniec, a 134.46-hectare reserve preserves the hill’s landscape values and a well-preserved stand of old fir and beech forest.
Other protected areas draw attention to particular plants and habitats: Szachownica covers 16.67 hectares and protects the very rare chess flower in Krówniki. Brzoza Czarna covers 2.60 hectares and was established in Reczpol to preserve a natural stand of black birch. The 1.93-hectare Skarpa Jaksmanicka Fauna Reserve is in Siedliska and protects a large breeding colony of European bee-eaters on a loess slope near the road.
Plant diversity and regional discoveries
The Bolestraszyce Arboretum is in the municipality of Żurawica, 7 km north of Przemyśl, and covers 12.8 hectares. Its grounds include a park, a pomological orchard, nurseries and a Neoclassical manor house with a natural history museum. Visitors can see around 1,800 species, varieties and forms of trees and shrubs, as well as 1,200 species of herbaceous plants. The arboretum offers a distinct botanical focus alongside the forests and hills of the protected areas.
