Namysłów’s rectangular market square measures 142 by 70 metres. Ten streets lead off from it. The museum explores the town mill, first mentioned in the 14th century. In 1418, it was moved outside the fortifications to the medieval “Mill Island”. It was powered by four water wheels, driven by the Młynówka, a tributary of the Widawa.
Visits to the Muzeum Techniki Młynarskiej are possible by prior telephone arrangement. Visiting hours are listed as Tuesday to Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Saturday, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The mill’s history lets you explore a specific aspect of technology, rather than getting to know the city only through its architecture.
Religious Diversity and Architectural History
The Szlak różnorodności religijnej (Religious Diversity Trail) leads to the churches of St Peter and St Paul and St Francis in Namysłów. Other stops include a memorial to the former Evangelical Church of St Andrew and the former synagogue, which now houses a sports hall. The Izba Regionalna (Regional Chamber) also tells the story of Namysłów’s past. The cultural centre is housed in a former Evangelical school dating from 1789. The current form of Namysłów Castle took shape from 1360 onwards, by order of the Bohemian King Charles IV, who also funded part of the city’s fortifications. The castle is located on the grounds of the Namysłów Brewery, so access may be restricted. The brewery has a brewing tradition dating back seven centuries.
Cycling, the Reservoir and Nature
“Rowerem wokół Namysłowa – Trasa 2, southern section” is designated as an easy recreational cycling route. It is 37.9 km long, with a stated riding time of 3.0 to 4.0 hours. These details can help you plan the route as a longer activity in its own right. For water sports, the Michalice Reservoir lies 1.5 kilometres north of Namysłów. It offers good conditions for windsurfing, sailing and kayaking, and there are also campsites by the reservoir.
