Buildings and history in Neisse
The basilica was added to Poland’s register of historic monuments in 2011. Audio guides for visitors are available from the parish office. Another striking building is Wieża Wrocławska: the 33-metre-high Gothic gate tower was incorporated into Nysa’s 14th-century fortifications. Bastion Św. Jadwigi has been fully restored and turned into a tourist attraction and a venue for cultural events.
Individual details also tell the story of the city’s design. Piękna Studnia features a Baroque wrought-iron grille created by Wilhelm Helleweg. Fontanna Trytona was carved from marble from Sławniowice in 1700–1701. Centrum Produktu Lokalnego is in the centre of Nysa, next to Fontanna Trytona. Its workshops focus on cooking, cake baking, decorating gingerbread and making chocolate. Muzeum Powiatowe w Nysie has a permanent exhibition on the history of Nysa and the entire region; the museum is housed in the historic former palace of the Bishops of Wrocław.
Circular routes and fortifications
Miejski Szlak Turystyczny passes through Nysa’s most important historic sights and fortifications. The circular route is 13 kilometres long. You can get guidebooks, maps and a tourist pass for this route from the tourist information point in Nysa. Szlak Forteczny leads to Fort II; you can explore Nysa’s preserved fortifications on foot along this route. A historical battle reenactment takes place at Fort II on the Saturday of the final weekend in July as part of Dni Twierdzy Nysa.
Jezioro Nyskie offers a different kind of route: it follows the shore of Jezioro Nyskie and EuroVelo 9. It returns to Nysa via Szlak Kopernikowski, forming a circular route of around 30–35 kilometres. A section along the dam on this route is about 5 kilometres long and paved.
