Discover Wschowa’s architectural history
Wschowa’s buildings and squares tell the story of different eras. The town hall preserves a Gothic hall with a net vault dating from the first half of the 16th century. Several Baroque townhouses from the 17th century stand along the western side of the market square. During the Saxon period, they were converted into a royal residence. The 18th-century town fountain displays a copy of a sculpture of a woman in armor; the original is kept at the Muzeum Ziemi Wschowskiej.
The town walls offer another connection to the past: they were built of stone and brick. Construction of the complete fortifications began under Casimir the Great; they were completed in the 15th century. Another architectural landmark is the Holy Trinity Church, built in 1837–1839 to a design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The parish church of St. Stanislaus, Bishop and Martyr, and the Assumption of Mary was rebuilt in 1720–1726 to a design by Pompeo Ferrari. The Jesuit College opened in 1727 on the site of the former municipal mint.
History in the museum and out and about
The Muzeum Ziemi Wschowskiej has archaeological, ethnographic, historical and art-historical collections. They focus in particular on the history of the royal town of Wschowa. If you want to explore individual aspects of the town’s history in more depth, you can treat the museum and the historic buildings as separate points of interest. Organized groups can visit the Lapidarium Rzeźby Nagrobnej on a guided tour, available by prior telephone or electronic reservation.
The tourist information office also recommends the 140-minute “Królewskie Miasto Wschowa” route. The early 20th-century water tower stands on the edge of Wolsztyński Park. The signposted, 39.3-kilometer Wschowa–Lgiń–Sława cycling route also starts there. The two routes offer different ways to explore Wschowa: one bears the name of the royal town, while the other is a cycling route with a stated total distance. Take the 39.3-kilometer distance into account when planning your day.
The lake and scenery as another vacation focus
Lake Lgińsko is the largest of the three lakes in Wschowa municipality and covers 68.6 hectares. Its scenic beach is a popular place for recreation. Located about 10 km from Wschowa, the lake makes a separate excursion destination alongside the town’s cultural attractions. Wschowa municipality also contains a 2,894-hectare section of Przemęcki Landscape Park. The Powiat Wschowski’s landscape includes the Leszczynskie Lakeland, the Leszczyńska Upland and the Głogów Ice-Marginal Valley.
When choosing a holiday apartment, you can therefore consider whether you mainly want to discover Wschowa’s architectural and urban history, or also include the lake and countryside in your vacation plans. If you want to focus on Wschowa’s sights, Wschowa is a natural place to search for accommodation; for days spent cycling or relaxing by the lake, plan those destinations as separate activities.
