Sandstone Rocks on the Outskirts
Szwajcaria Lwówecka is a sandstone formation on the outskirts of Lwówek Śląski, in the Bóbr valley. Its cliffs reach heights of up to 30 metres, and the rock formation lies at about 255 metres above sea level. It forms a natural gateway to the Dolina Bobru Landscape Park. There is a nature trail at Szwajcaria, as well as a hiking trail leading to the top of the hill. The rocks and the route to the summit offer a nature-focused alternative to the historic sights in town.
City Walls and Preserved Fortifications
The town’s fortifications can also be explored through specific structures: several dozen square bastions and two defensive towers have been preserved in Löwenberg in Schlesien. One section of the defensive walls runs from a stone bridge over the moat, past two towers, towards the gate tower known as Lubańska. The bridge, moat, towers and gate tower form a clearly traceable sequence through this part of the fortifications. Alongside the rocky landscape, this offers another theme for your stay: the town’s history and its distinctive architectural landmarks.
Minerals and Agates at the Town Hall
The town hall houses the exhibition “Bogactwo przyrodnicze i geologiczne Ziemi Lwóweckiej”. It features minerals and interactive screens with photos, maps and descriptions; visitors can also hear animal calls. Children can search for Lwówek agates in the sand. The exhibition thus combines nature and geology with an engaging discovery activity for younger visitors. Check whether the exhibition is currently open before your visit.
Agate Tradition at Lwóweckie Lato Agatowe
The annual Lwóweckie Lato Agatowe includes exhibitions of collectibles and fine jewellery in the rooms of the Renaissance town hall. Exhibition details vary from year to year. The festival also features a family celebration with stage entertainment, a treasure hunters’ parade and a motorcyclists’ parade. A varied market with 200 stalls offers regional products and crafts, among other things; the programme may change from year to year. If you want the festival to be a highlight of your stay, bear in mind when planning that it is a recurring event.
Walking and Cycling Routes Through the Town
Several waymarked long-distance and local routes pass through Lwówek Śląski. The green hiking trail runs towards Gryfów Śląski and Bolesławiec; the blue one towards Lubomierz and Grodziec; and the yellow one to Wleń and Niwnice. The black hiking trail to Podskale Castle starts in town. There are also named cycling routes: ER-4 connects Dresden and Wrocław, ER-6 is called “Dolina Bobru” and runs between Žacleŕ and Bolesławiec, while ER-10 is called “Smědá–Kwisa–Bóbr” and leads from Lwówek Śląski to Frydlant. You can choose between hiking trails in different directions and several cycling routes. As trail conditions and waymarking can change, it is advisable to check the current route before setting out.
Choose the Right Focus for Your Stay
When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to consider what you most want your trip to be about: the rocks and trails, the town fortifications, the mineral exhibition or—if the dates coincide—the agate festival. These interests offer different ways to shape your stay, and you do not have to limit yourself to just one.
