Church: architecture and contemporary history

The Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Najświętszego Serca Pana Jezusa) is built of brick, has a cruciform plan, three naves and was built in the Vistula Neo-Gothic style. Its dimensions are specified precisely: 40 metres long, 22 metres wide and 18 metres high. The floor plan describes the building’s form, while the three naves divide its interior; the style adds to its architectural classification. This gives architecture enthusiasts a concrete picture of its form, layout and scale.

The building’s history also includes events from the Second World War: during the war, the church served as a grain store and ammunition depot.

Remembrance and religious tradition

A grave and monument in the parish cemetery in Dzietrzniki commemorate January Uprising insurgents from Franciszek Parczewski’s unit who fell in battle. They died on 22 April 1863 in the Battle of Kluski. The site also commemorates participants in the Polish–Soviet War of 1918–1920, as well as soldiers and civilians murdered during the Second World War. The memorials thus span the 19th-century uprising and the wartime years of the 20th century.

Another religious tradition leads into the forests of Dzietrzniki: in August 1856, local residents gathered after reports that Franciszka Pęcherz had experienced an apparition of the Virgin Mary in the branches of a tall pine tree. This story differs from the memorials in the parish cemetery and adds an account rooted in the landscape to the local history.

The riding trail and nearby places

The Wieluń–Jura Riding Trail passes through Dzietrzniki. One account of a stage mentions a rest stop at Mr Kalemba’s: the group rests there for two hours before riding on. This time refers to the break, not the duration of the entire trail. If you are interested in riding trails, you can distinguish the route through the village from the two-hour rest on the described stage.

The Źródełko Objawienia spring is nearby, close to the village of Kałuże, in the Dzietrzniki Forest and in the area known as Dolina Objawienia. Local residents and tourists have been visiting the spring for decades; it lies near a pine tree that is no longer there. Masses are celebrated in a wooden chapel near the spring every year on 3 May and 15 August. The place of worship is not officially recognised by the Church authorities. The forest and spring offer a different focus from the church and parish cemetery; the chapel adds recurring religious dates to the natural setting.
