Tomaszów Mazowiecki combines nature experiences with unusual insights into the history of the Pilica River. In the Niebieskie Źródła Nature Reserve, karst springs and birdlife take centre stage; at the Groty Nagórzyckie, an underground tourist route passes through former mining chambers. The Skansen Rzeki Pilicy, meanwhile, is dedicated to a river. When choosing a holiday apartment for your stay, you can therefore first consider whether your trip will focus more on nature, underground discoveries, cycling or the history of the Pilica.

Spring landscape along the Pilica

The Niebieskie Źródła Nature Reserve lies within the administrative boundaries of Tomaszów Mazowiecki, on the right bank of the Pilica and in the buffer zone of Sulejowski Landscape Park. It protects picturesque karst springs and provides a refuge for numerous bird species. This makes it a nature-focused destination, clearly distinct from the underground and cultural-history themes of the town.

A nature trail runs along a walkable embankment to the main spring basin. There are five stops along the route. The trail thus connects the spring landscape with an informative look at its natural features: when planning your visit, you can include the trail as a specific part of your day and incorporate all five stops into your exploration.

Groty Nagórzyckie: an underground journey

The Groty Nagórzyckie reveal another side of the area. Their underground tourist route is about 160 m long and runs through artificial mining chambers left behind by a former sand mine. The historical origins of the chambers are therefore an integral part of what makes this destination distinctive.

In the central part of the mining chambers, the route passes through two parallel, illuminated passages. There are also historical and thematic exhibitions about the caves. Local guides also share numerous legends associated with the caves. Here, then, the artificially created spaces, their history and the stories about them are brought together. For your travel plans, this offers a different focus from the nature trail near the springs.

The Pilica as a theme and an experience

At the Skansen Rzeki Pilicy, the river itself is the connecting theme: it is Poland’s first open-air museum dedicated to a river. The first structure there was a wooden watermill relocated from the Łuciąża.

The Pilica also features in kayaking: most trips along its blue waterway start in Tomaszów Mazowiecki. Together with the open-air museum dedicated to the river, this offers both a cultural and an active way to engage with the same river theme. The descriptions refer to different kinds of experiences: the museum focuses on the river, while a kayak trip takes place on the waterway.

Cycling as another travel idea

The 22 km blue cycling route Szlak rowerowy niebieski im. Juliana Tuwima starts at the PKP/PKS railway and bus station in Tomaszów Mazowiecki. Its length and starting point are useful details if you are considering including cycling in your travel plans. This named route with a specific starting point can be considered alongside the town’s nature and cultural themes, without equating it with the other experiences.
