Uniejów combines traces of the Middle Ages with a spa area, a landscape park and different ways to explore. The castle of the Archbishops of Gniezno is a well-preserved 14th-century summer residence and one of Poland’s best-preserved medieval fortified buildings. Other highlights include the Gothic Collegiate Church of the Assumption of Mary, walking paths and SOWA, which offers opportunities for independent exploration and experimentation. When choosing your holiday apartment, it may therefore help to decide first whether you want to focus your stay on architectural history, activities in the spa area or a mix of both.

Castle, park and church art

The castle tells two sides of its history: it served as a summer residence for the Archbishops of Gniezno and is also one of Poland’s particularly well-preserved medieval fortified buildings. An English-style landscape park was created around the castle between 1860 and 1870 at the initiative of its owners at the time, the Toll family. Different periods meet here: the 14th-century residence and a 19th-century park. Visitors interested in history can consider these two aspects as different ways of experiencing the place.

The architectural history of the Collegiate Church of the Assumption of Mary can be traced through specific details. The Gothic church was built in 1349, and its chancel retains a 14th-century rib vault. The intersecting ribs draw the eye to the structure above the chancel. The church also contains the tomb of Saint Bogumił, donated in 1666: a black marble tomb topped by a semi-reclining bronze figure of the saint in episcopal vestments. The building’s form and vaulting offer topics to explore alongside the design of the tomb, its dark marble surface and the depiction of the saint.

Spa area, paths and discoveries

Uniejów’s spa area includes a therapeutic footpath, a combined walking and cycling path, and a canoe launch point. The “Bulwary Nadwarciańskie” promenade connects recreational facilities in the spa area; near the beach and the castle, it has been extended with floating pontoons. The historic town trail “Uniejowskie korzenie” offers a different focus, passing the most important historic buildings in Uniejów. You can choose according to your interests: the Bulwary connect recreational facilities, while the town trail focuses on historic buildings. Check local access conditions in the spa area before your visit.

SOWA complements the historical themes with independent exploration and experimentation. A municipal post dated August 7, 2026, states that SOWA has 26 research stations, all developed by the Copernicus Science Centre. The number and details may change, so check the latest information before visiting. For trip planning, SOWA offers a different focus from the castle, church and town trail: here, the emphasis is on trying things out for yourself.

Another distinctive feature of Uniejów is its geothermal water: it is almost 70°C and is drawn from a depth of 2 km. Its temperature and depth give the town another distinctive facet alongside its architectural and park history.
