City History Between Streets and Fortifications
Łęczyca’s medieval street network was laid out in the 13th century when the town was established, and it has been preserved to this day. It offers a tangible starting point for exploring the town’s early development: the townscape is shaped not only by individual historic buildings, but also by its inherited street network. Those interested in history can consider this urban context alongside the individual buildings.
Among the notable historic details is a preserved defensive tower on Kościelna Street. In the 18th century, it was converted into the bell tower of St Andrew’s Church. The Norbertine monastery and Norbertine church were built onto the town walls in 1603. The defensive castle dates from the 14th century and was built during the reign of King Casimir the Great.
The Museum in the Defensive Castle
The Museum in Łęczyca is housed in the defensive castle. Its collection of demonic sculptures is particularly unusual: it has been assembled since the mid-1950s and contains more than 400 exhibits. Almost 200 of them are on display. Visitors who enjoy culture and unusual subjects will find a different way to discover the town here than by exploring its medieval streets and buildings.
For the tourist season, from 1 April to 31 October, the stated opening hours are 10:00 to 17:00: Tuesday to Friday, as well as Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Green Routes and Activities in the Town Park
If you would like to spend time outdoors, you can plan a hike along the 8 km Łęczyca–Tum green trail. It starts at Łęczyca railway station and runs via the reservoir and Staromiejska Street to Tum and Kwiatkówek. The town park offers different reasons to visit than a hike: it has a playground and a skate plaza, and offers walks in green surroundings. There is also an operational graduation tower there.
