Tarnawa Dolna brings together a location on the Tarnawka stream, excursions along forest trails and a layered church history. The village stretches along the stream and also serves as a starting point for trips to Prorokowa Góra, Tarnawska Góra and Leskowiec. You can therefore treat nature excursions and historical discoveries as distinct focuses of your stay.

Forest trails and excursion destinations

The forest trails provide opportunities for excursions to three named destinations: Prorokowa Góra, Tarnawska Góra and Leskowiec. If you like to plan a day around a specific destination, these names offer different starting points for your plans. The excursions can be considered a separate part of your stay; the church and the historical artefacts in the village offer a different focus.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether you are choosing Tarnawa Dolna mainly as a starting point for excursions like these, or whether the village’s history will play a greater role in your travel plans. The stream and forest trails are as much a part of the village as its historic buildings and artefacts. Which of these sides you would like to get to know better can shape your idea of a suitable holiday day.

The Church of St. John Cantius

The present-day brick Church of St. John Cantius was built between 1878 and 1882. On 3 September 1882, Bishop Albin Dunajewski consecrated the church. Its structure reveals more than its outward form: it has three naves, while the presbytery is narrower than the main nave and ends in a pentagonal shape. The presbytery is the area around the altar; its different width and end give the church a clearly defined layout.

The furnishings also include works from different periods. The church contains a late Baroque altar cross donated by the Tarnowski family. There is also the painting “Zwiastowanie,” painted by Józef Maultz in 1846, as well as a stone baptismal font from the first half of the 19th century. Together with the building from the late 19th century, these details span a range of periods that cannot be reduced to a single date: the architecture, painting and furnishings each point to distinct chapters in the village’s history.

History of the village

Tarnawa Dolna was founded in the 14th century during the settlement of the Skawa Valley. This early date marks a different historical point of reference from the construction and consecration of the present-day church several centuries later. A figure of Saint Anthony from the 18th century is also among the village’s historical artefacts. Tarnawa Dolna thus brings together different periods: the founding of the village, a religious artwork from the 18th century and the church and its furnishings from the 19th century.

This gives you a choice of different interests when planning your holiday, without having to settle on just one theme. Excursions along forest trails, the Tarnawka stream and the church’s history offer different ways to enjoy your time in the village. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, it may help to first decide which of these aspects matters most to you during your stay.
