Renaissance history at the castle

The Renaissance castle in Sucha Beskidzka is also known as “Mały Wawel.” Its history began with a wooden-and-stone fortified residence built between 1554 and 1580. Between 1608 and 1614, Piotr Komorowski expanded it into a representative Renaissance magnate residence. The complex has three wings and four corner towers. Two-storey arcades run along the south and west wings, facing the courtyard. These features make it possible to trace the building’s development from a fortified residence to a representative residence.

The Muzeum Miejskie Suchej Beskidzkiej has been housed in the castle since 2007. Visitors can also play chess in the castle and park complex using one of two portable chess sets: alongside a traditional set, there is one for three players. City history and regional wooden architecture

A white-and-blue-marked urban historical and local heritage trail runs through Sucha Beskidzka. It connects historic sites and city landmarks, offering a distinct way to explore the city’s history. Karczma Rzym in the centre is an example of regional wooden architecture and a key point on the Małopolska Wooden Architecture Trail, established in 2002.

The old church also makes its own architectural statement: its Gothic structure is combined with Renaissance decorative elements. Fragments of polychrome decoration have been preserved, as has a Baroque painting of the Assumption of Mary on the vault of the presbytery. Hiking trails and views from Mioduszyna

A blue hiking trail leads from Sucha Beskidzka over the 632-metre-high Mioduszyna to a viewing platform on the mountainside. From there, you can enjoy a panorama of Sucha Beskidzka and the area where the Stryszawka and Skawa rivers meet. The platform is above the Garce settlement and has a shelter for protection from the weather. It was made freely accessible to visitors year-round.

Another hiking route leads from Sucha Beskidzka via Mioduszyna to Maków Podhalański; the route is listed as taking about three hours. Mioduszyna is marked at 632 metres on this route. If you’re planning a longer hike, you can also start at Sucha Beskidzka railway station and go via Lipska Góra to Żurawnica and on to Krzeszów Górny. Lipska Góra is 631 metres high, and Żurawnica is 724 metres high. The listed walking times are about 1 hour 30 minutes to Lipska Góra, 2 hours 30 minutes to 2 hours 45 minutes to Żurawnica, and 3 hours 15 minutes to Krzeszów Górny. Chapel on Mount Jasień and travel orientation

On Mount Jasień stands the Chapel of the Bar Confederates, a small stone building with Renaissance features as well as Gothic and Classicist elements. It was probably built in 1773 to commemorate the 1771 battles between the troops of the Bar Confederates and Russian troops under General Suvorov. Solemn masses for the homeland are held there on patriotic holidays.

Transport links are also worth considering when choosing a destination: important road and railway connections from Żywiec to Kraków, and from Silesia towards Zakopane, Rabka and Nowy Sącz, intersect in Sucha Beskidzka.
