Hiking trails and views

Three trail markers shape the network of routes through Maków Podhalański: blue, green and yellow. A blue trail leads from the railway station along ul. Orkana towards the bridge over the Skawa, then continues via Grzechynia Zagórze and Ostra Góra to the eastern slope of Magurka. The route from Maków Podhalański via these points is stated to be about 7.5 kilometres long.

From the direction of Sucha Beskidzka, another blue trail marked by the PTTK runs via Mioduszyna and the Piatkówka settlement to Maków Podhalański railway station. Its approximate length is 10.8 kilometres. The trail follows the ridge of Mioduszyna, passes through the Polana settlement and goes by the summit of Góra Polany, at 611 metres above sea level, towards the Makowska Góra settlement.

The green hiking trail, marked by the PTTK, runs for about 10.5 kilometres via Makowska Góra and Budzów to Chełm Wschodni. The yellow trail runs via Ostrysz, Przysłopski Wierch, Koskowa Góra and Góra Kotoń to Pcim; it is stated to be about 27 kilometres long. The routes listed here therefore offer a range of distances to choose from. The figures help you compare trail lengths, but do not indicate how long the hikes will take.

The landscape also offers a distinctive landmark: from the slope of Makowska Góra, you can see the Pasmo Jałowieckie and Pasmo Babiogórskie ranges. Further north, the Pasmo Chełmu range is also visible. Wood art, embroidery and local history

The Izba Regionalna im. E. Wacyka features folk art by embroiderers and sculptors, wooden toys and household items from earlier times. Photographs and documents offer insights into the history of Maków Podhalański and its surroundings. The regional collection thus complements the impressions you can take in outdoors, on the trails and around town.

The wooden sculptures of the artist are the focus of the Galeria autorska Mieczysława Głucha; their character ranges from sacred to modernist to classical. Visitors can attend talks there about the sculptural tradition in Podhale and try their hand at carving wood, clay and stone. Maków embroidery is another local art form. Anna Koziana from Maków Podhalański uses it to decorate tablecloths, table runners, napkins, bed linen and shirts. It is characterised by dense white embroidery with embroidered openwork patterns. The technique can therefore also be compared across the different types of textile.

Sacred architecture and traces of the past

The brick Filas Chapel on ul. 3 Maja was built in 1845 by J.K. Filas. Its form corresponds to the chancel of the parish church. The Church of the Transfiguration stands behind the small, almost triangular market square and was built in the Josephine style. Elements of its former Baroque furnishings have been preserved inside. Since the beginning of the 17th century, particular veneration has been paid there to the image of the Virgin Mary, believed to work miracles and known as the protector of families and the Madonna of Maków.

In the northeastern part of Maków Podhalański, near Moniuszki Street and the yellow hiking trail, remains of the stone wall of a 19th-century bloomery furnace have been preserved. The furnace belonged to the “Maurycy” ironworks. This trace of industrial history offers a different perspective from the town’s sacred architecture and collections.
