Walk and View

A walk around Biesiadki is well worth a longer stop in Lipka, a hamlet in the western part of the village. From there, the view stretches to Las Okocimski and the nearer municipal area; the panorama of the Beskid Wyspowy lies in the background. On clear days, the Tatra Mountains are also visible. Wooden Architecture and Village History

Biesiadki is classified as a forest-clearing and strip-field village. This classification adds a historical settlement category to the history of individual buildings. Most of the older wooden buildings were destroyed in the great fire of 1920; the village’s present-day wooden buildings, arranged like terraces, were built afterwards. The village’s current appearance therefore tells not only of older wooden forms, but also of its development after the fire.

The log houses have boarded walls and gable roofs. Their window frames are decoratively carved; the painted walls also feature small patterns of carved strips. A gable roof consists of two sloping roof surfaces that meet at the ridge; boarded walls are clad on the outside with planks. This makes it possible to distinguish the basic form from the ornament: the roof and walls define the exterior form, while carving and paint add decorative accents.

Two layers can be seen in the houses: their terrace-like arrangement shapes the overall appearance, while the window frames and strip patterns highlight individual details. Church, Cemetery and Remembrance

In the village centre stands St Matthew’s Church in Biesiadki, a larch-wood church. It complements the log houses with a different form of wooden construction and is also a landmark in its own right at the centre of the village. The parish cemetery dates from around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The grave of an unknown soldier has been preserved there. The cross erected there to mark the 30th anniversary of the restoration of independence no longer exists. The church and cemetery offer different ways of connecting with the village’s history: through architecture and through remembrance of the unknown soldier.
