Town hall, museum and sacred history
The town hall on the market square is an eclectic building with a four-storey tower. It was built in 1909–1910. The term eclecticism refers to architecture that combines elements from different styles; in the town hall, the tall tower is one of the building’s distinctive features.
The regional museum displays two bourgeois interiors, landscapes, portraits and local historical memorabilia. Brzesko thus offers two different ways of engaging with the town’s history: a town hall from the early 20th century and a collection featuring interiors, pictures and memorabilia. The Jewish cemetery in Brzesko was entered in the register of historic monuments in 1992. The Church of St James the Apostle also adds to the historical record: its surviving historic section dates from the mid-15th century.
Okocim: Brewery complex, palace and park
The urban and architectural complex of the Brzesko–Okocim Brewery, the surrounding buildings and the adjacent palace-and-park complex of the Goetz-Okocimski family began to take shape in 1845 and continued to be expanded until the 1930s. Its long development can be seen in the ensemble’s different parts. The palace itself was built in 1898–1900 in the Neo-Baroque and Neo-Rococo styles; the palace complex with its park is considered an important historic monument.
An English landscape park dating from 1900 surrounds the palace in Okocim. Native and exotic trees and shrubs grow there. The architectural history and the park landscape offer different points of interest: those interested in architecture can look for details on the palace and brewery complex, while those who appreciate the design of a cultural landscape can also take in the mix of plants described in the park.
Bocheniec: Rampart remains and viewing tower
At 394 metres above sea level, Bocheniec is the highest point in the Brzesko area. The eastern rampart remains of a Wiślan hillfort dating from the turn of the 9th and 10th centuries have been preserved there. They are about four metres high and 18 metres wide at the base. These measurements give the archaeological remains a tangible scale, while their historical attribution connects them with the region’s early history.
A 25-metre-high, six-storey viewing tower opened on Bocheniec in October 2023. The tower and rampart remains represent distinctly different periods. If you would like to include the viewing tower in your plans, check the latest access information before visiting.
Pilgrimage routes and places to discover
The Via Regia pilgrimage route runs from Brzesko via Jasień Brzeski and Brzeźnica to Bochnia. The Szlak wokół Brzeska is different: it is a signposted hiking trail. The two routes therefore offer different thematic points of interest: a pilgrimage route with named places along the way, and a signposted hiking trail. You do not need information about duration or length to choose between them; first consider whether you would like to focus on the pilgrimage route or on hiking.
The discovery route through the municipality of Brzesko also connects places with a variety of themes. These include the Pantheon of Saints in Szczepanów, the Romeo i Julia natural monument in Mokrzyska and the Pavimentum Copernicanum in Brzesko. In Szczepanów, Pope John Paul II elevated the parish church to the status of a minor basilica on 6 September 2003. A triptych from the late 15th century is located in the south side chapel of the old church building there.
