Sacred architecture and medieval history
In 1331, Władysław Łokietek had the Church of the Finding of the Cross and a Franciscan monastery built in Radziejów. Also in 1331, the parish church of the Assumption of Mary was built at its current site, founded by Jan Grot, Bishop of Kraków. The Franciscan complex retains a Gothic church portal and traces of pointed-arch windows in the south wall of the presbytery. The complex is considered one of the few examples of its kind in small urban centres in eastern Kuyavia.
On 14 September 2014, the Franciscan church was elevated to the status of a sanctuary of Our Mother of Perpetual Help. These sacred buildings give Radziejów’s history a tangible setting: the date 1331 links different foundations, while the portal and remaining windows offer insights into the architecture of the Franciscan complex.
Routes and events with historical connections
A section of the Szlak Piastowski passes through the OPPT area, linking the battlefield site near Płowce with the sacred buildings in Radziejów. The route is named after Piast Kołodziej, considered the ancestor of Poland’s first dynasty; the Szlak Piastowski also passes through Radziejów County. Another route, the “Bitwy pod Płowcami” hiking trail, passes through the OPPT area and connects Radziejów with Osięciny.
The historical connection reaches back to the battle fought in the vicinity of Radziejów on 27 September 1331 during the Polish–Teutonic War. A reenactment of the Battle of Płowce takes place every year in Radziejów County; no specific venue is given. In August, Radziejów also hosts the “Jarmark Królewski,” featuring demonstrations of knightly combat and an evening procession of armed retinues. The “Radziejowskie Sejmiki Szlacheckie” takes place there in June. They are linked to the Kuyavian provincial assemblies held in Radziejów, including at the Franciscan monastery, from 1515 to 1793.
Lakes and nature in the surrounding area
Lake Głuszyńskie is a glacial ribbon lake running north to south, through which the Zgłowiączka River flows. Its bird species include gulls, ducks and geese. Since 16 June 1983, the lake has been protected as the “Jezioro Głuszyńskie” landscape protection area and is also located in a noise protection zone.
Lake Świeskie has a different character: it is small and shallow, resembles a natural pond and is intensively used for fish farming. It, too, is part of the “Jezioro Głuszyńskie” landscape protection area. Associated with it is a complex of meadow and marsh vegetation known as the Lake Świeskie channel complex. Comparing the two lakes highlights their different landscape features without equating their uses.

In the county, the Nadgoplański Park Tysiąclecia is both a nature reserve and a landscape park.
