Monastery, Crypt and Church Art

The church of the post-Benedictine monastery retains its original form as a Romanesque basilica. Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque features complement the building. Another distinctive feature is the western crypt, considered one of just three crypts of its kind in Europe. The monastery thus combines a clear Romanesque plan with later architectural touches; when you visit, your attention is not limited to a single period.

The Fara – Church of St. James the Apostle also offers a distinct perspective on Mogilno’s sacred history. The Gothic church dates from 1511. Its main altar features a painting of St. James the Greater from the 18th century. The construction date and the painting thus belong to different centuries: one shapes the history of the church building, while the other adds to the picture of its furnishings.

Exhibitions on the Region’s History

At the Museum of the Mogilno Region, the permanent exhibition “History of the Mogilno Region” takes visitors through different chapters of regional history using guild documents and historical banners. The banners bear the years 1919, 1923, 1927, 1929 and 1946. A second exhibition, “Prehistory of the Mogilno Region,” spans a broad period: it displays tools and everyday and ritual objects from the Neolithic through the Bronze and Iron Ages to the Middle Ages and modern era.

The museum also focuses on regional folk culture and folk art, crafts, and the everyday lives of the region’s inhabitants. Together, the exhibitions offer different perspectives, from early tools and ritual objects to documents, banners and examples of folk art. If you are interested in Mogilno’s history, you can include a range of subjects and periods in your travel plans rather than limiting your stay to a single building.

City Park and Routes Through the Surrounding Area

In the centre of Mogilno is the city park with its summer amphitheatre and fountain. The park features a fountain as well as renovated paths with new lighting. The summer amphitheatre has 300 seats and is used for concerts and outdoor events in summer. A visit to the park offers a different focus from the churches and museum exhibitions; use of the amphitheatre is tied to summer events.

Two municipal cycling route suggestions, with different distances, are available. Route No. 8 (MDW) is about 14 kilometres long, goes around Lake Wiecanowskie and starts and ends in Mogilno. Route No. 1 (MSK) covers about 28 kilometres: it connects Mogilno with Kalwaria Mogileńska and then returns to Mogilno. Neither route is currently marked.

Another point of interest for an excursion is the historic Mogilno–Orchowo railway line. The 20.8-kilometre line includes 25 bridges and viaducts, among them a 44-metre-long bridge over Lake Mogileńskie and a 43-metre-long bridge over the Noteć. The line is passable, and occasional railbike rides take place there. These rides are not described as a regular service, so you should not assume they take place on a fixed event date.
