Monastery History and Church Art
The Church of St. John the Apostle and a complex of former monastery buildings extend across a peninsula on Lake Mogileńskie. The Benedictine monastery and church were built in the 11th century. Three crypts lie beneath the Church of St. John the Apostle. The peninsula setting and the crypts provide two specific points of reference for the monastery complex—one in the landscape, the other beneath the church.
The main altar in the Parish Church of St. James the Greater features an 18th-century image of the church’s and parish’s patron saint. The denominational cemetery is also among the historic sites: it was established in 1816 and includes the tomb monument of the priest Piotr Wawrzyniak. Together with the monastery complex, these dates span the period from the 11th century to modern times and offer different points of interest for a cultural and historical stay.
Town Buildings and Summer in the Park
Mogilno’s town buildings also display a variety of architectural forms. The town hall is a 19th-century eclectic building; its Neo-Gothic design recalls Western European castles. The former Bank Spółdzielczy building dates from the early 20th century and was built in the Venetian style. These two buildings draw attention to periods and styles different from those of the monastery complex.
The city park is located in the centre of Mogilno. Its summer amphitheatre has 300 seats and hosts summer concerts and outdoor events. This gives the park a different focus from the churches and historic architecture: here, the emphasis is on outdoor events in summer. Cycling Routes and Historic Railway Line
Two suggested cycling routes of different lengths are described. Route No. 1 is about 28 km long, starts and ends in Mogilno, and passes through Kalwaria Mogileńska. Route No. 8 (MDW) is about 14 km long, also starts and ends in Mogilno, and runs around Lake Wiecanowskie. The shorter option loops around the lake, while the longer route passes through Kalwaria Mogileńska. Neither route is currently signposted; take this into account when planning your ride.
The historic Mogilno–Orchowo railway line is part of the area’s transport history. It is 20.8 km long and includes 25 viaducts and bridges. The line is passable, and draisine rides are held there occasionally. If you would like to plan such a ride, check in advance whether a suitable date is scheduled.
