Church and museums in Ostrzeszów
The parish church in Ostrzeszów was founded in 1353. Its nave was added in 1360; after earlier destruction, the church was rebuilt in 1721–1723. Inside, frescoes tell of a long tradition of patronage: residents of Ostrzeszów commissioned them from the 14th to the 19th century. There are also Baroque altars and a copy of Murillo’s “The Assumption of the Virgin.” The chancel arch contains limewood figures, which were probably carved by Albrecht Dürer.
Another glimpse into local history awaits you at the church and monastery complex of the Sisters of Nazareth. The museum covers the presence of the Bernardines and the history of the Sisters of Nazareth. It also features a temporary exhibition about the Sisters of Nazareth in Grodno, as well as former burial crypts that are open to visitors. Access is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 13:00, 14:00 or 15:00, and on Sundays at 14:00 or 15:00.
The Władysław Golus Regional Museum is located in the town hall at Rynek 19. Its permanent exhibitions focus on Norwegian officers at Oflag XXI C, the work of Antoni Serbeński, and “Ignacy Moś for his city.” In Ostrzeszów, these different perspectives sit side by side: sacred art in the parish church, and local history and exhibitions at the town hall museum.
Cycling routes and nature destinations
For longer cycling trips, the Amber Cycling Route begins in Syców and continues via the Ostrzeszów Hills, Kobyla Góra, Ostrzeszów, Mikstat, Ołobok, Kalisz, Russów, Stare Miasto, Konin and Ślesin to Przewóz. The route runs mainly along paved roads with light traffic; at times, it follows unpaved tracks and field or forest paths. There are no major technical challenges, and the route can be ridden regardless of bicycle type or fitness level.
A shorter option is the black-marked “W Dolinę Baryczy” cycling route: it runs from Ostrzeszów via Rojów to Szklarka Myślniewska, is designated as a connecting route, is suitable for beginners and is 11 km long. For a longer nature route, try the red-marked “Szlak Przyrodniczy” nature trail. It is 21 km long and runs from the OSiR in Ostrzeszów via the Jodły Ostrzeszowskie nature reserve, Pieczyska, Godziętowy, Tokarzew and Królewskie, returning to the OSiR.
The Ostrzeszów Hills in the municipality offer hiking and cycling routes, as well as the “Pieczyska” and “Jodły Ostrzeszowskie” nature reserves. Bałczyna is also in the Gmina Ostrzeszów, stands 278 m high and offers panoramic views over the Ostrzeszów area. For horse riding, the municipality has riding centres with an 18 km forest route.
Plan your swimming and stay
The supervised bathing area in Ostrzeszów has a sandy beach and a 60 × 110-metre pool. A diving platform and a 50-metre water slide add to the facilities; WOPR lifeguards supervise the bathing area. Another, separate swimming option is the Oceanik indoor pool at the KąpieLOVA sports and leisure centre. It has a stainless-steel leisure pool with air and water features, as well as a children’s pool.
