Church and Memorial Sites

The Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary was built in 1927. On 15 August 2002, the 75th anniversary of the church’s construction, a black stone plaque was unveiled in its vestibule. It commemorates participants in the Greater Poland Uprising, soldiers who fought for freedom and independence, and three local parish priests who were tortured to death at the Nazi camp in Dachau. The plaque thus links remembrance of the uprising with the memory of the three priests.

Another part of the village’s history is the grave of Private Łukasz Kulik, who came from Pakosław, in the parish cemetery in Łowyń. Kulik was wounded in January 1919 during the uprising operations and murdered by Germans at the local railway station. The 1924 concrete monument was replaced by a stone slab and a black granite tombstone. The tombstone is decorated with a crowned eagle and a crossed rifle and sabre; the memorial was consecrated on 17 January 1996. While the plaque commemorates several groups and their fates, the grave focuses on a named private.

A Mill as a Historical Facet

A mill is also part of Łowyń’s history: it was built before 1912. It was probably a post mill dating from the 18th or 19th century, which remained in operation until 1939. The International R-1 Cycle Route passes through Łowyń between Lewice and Gorzyń. Near Gorzyń, it meets National Road 24.

Another route starts in Stare Osieczno and runs via Sowia Góra, Międzychód, Zatom Stary, Ławica, Chalin, Prusim, Kamionna, the “Dolina Kamionki” nature reserve, Mnichy and Łowyń. It then continues via Nowe Gorzycko to Wierzbno. Along this route, Łowyń is listed at 51.1 km and Wierzbno at 68.6 km.
