Industrial History and Cultural Heritage Sites
The Otra flows through Vennesla. Timber rafting and hydropower shaped local industry; at the Bommen River Museum, objects offer a glimpse into the time when the river was an important workplace in the community. The museum is housed in a building on Drivenesvegen, probably Vennesla’s oldest, dating from the mid-17th century. Here, the history of the river and the building connect a specific place with the working history of the municipality.
Other stops tell stories from different periods and aspects of the region’s heritage. Vigeland Manor was completed in 1847 and listed for protection in 1941. Rødbyen is Vennesla’s only surviving, contiguous workers’ housing estate and is considered an important cultural heritage site. Tømmerrenna is also a cultural heritage site in Vennesla. Those interested in the town’s architecture will find another example in the Vennesla Library and Cultural Centre: the building is made of solid timber, and its 27 load-bearing beams also serve as bookshelves and seating. The cultural centre received the State Award for Building Design.
The former Hunsfos paper mill is also part of this industrial history: Hunsfos Fabrikker was a paper mill on Hunsøya in Vennesla municipality. So far, 30,000 square metres of the building fabric have been rehabilitated; Hunsfos Business Park has once again made Hunsfos a centre for value creation in Vennesla. This describes a different aspect of industrial history from the objects at the Bommen River Museum: here, the development of a factory site; there, the former work carried out along the river.
Travelling on the Setesdal Line
The Setesdal Line is a narrow-gauge museum railway with a track gauge of 1,067 millimetres. It runs along an eight-kilometre-long, rugged and scenic route between Grovane and Røyknes stations in Vennesla municipality, Agder County. Bus routes 30 and 31 stop right outside Grovane station, providing access to the Setesdal Line. These specific details are useful for planning your trip: the route connects exactly these two stations, and Grovane is the station served by the bus routes mentioned.
Nature Destinations and Different Days Outdoors
The Meåsen nature trail offers views across the inner Linvann towards the sea. Along the trail are around ten signs about cultural heritage sites and Norwegian wildlife. Those who enjoy experiencing nature and culture together will find both themes along this route. Paulen Nature Reserve has a different focus: it protects a diverse and relatively undisturbed coniferous forest and its biodiversity.
For time by the water, Sagevannet has a bathing area with a floating bathing platform. Another way to experience the landscape from a viewpoint is the route to Slettehei: it reaches a viewpoint at an altitude of 277 metres and continues to a barbecue hut and a suspension bridge. The destinations mentioned are quite different—from views of the water and wildlife at Meåsen to the coniferous forest at Paulen and the viewpoint and other stops at Slettehei.
Tømmerrenna also has practical directions for getting there: there are two parking areas at Steinsfossen, near the start of Tømmerrenna. For a particularly active pursuit, Øvrebø Juvet Bungy offers a 57-metre bungee jump over the gorge and Kravlefossen waterfall, performed from a 40-metre-long suspension bridge.
