In Kvinesdal, there is plenty to discover, from traditional barrel-making to mining history, a waterfall and interactive activities. There are also a range of options for days out together: a swimming pool with several pools, a science centre, a bathing spot, and opportunities to enjoy nature and get active. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can start by considering which experiences you would like to shape your stay.

Cultural history and local collections

The Knaben Mining Museum focuses on the mining and wartime history of Knaben. The museum is housed in the former administrative building of the mining company, so its location connects the exhibition with the building’s former purpose. Those interested in the history of a place will find a different focus here than at the destination’s art and emigration museums.

The Førland Museum houses a large and varied collection of paintings by Førland. The Lister Emigration Museum in Kvinesdal, by contrast, explores movement across countries and decades: it covers emigration from the Lister region in the 19th century, as well as labor migration to Brooklyn from the 1950s to the 1970s. These distinct historical subjects sit side by side without being combined into a single narrative.

Feda also offers a specific connection to the past: the church there was inaugurated in 1802 and completed only in 1820, when the tower was built. If you would like to include architectural history and regional culture in your holiday plans, you can consider this place as a separate focus alongside the museums.

Activities for different kinds of holiday days

KVINAbadet is centrally located in Kvinesdal town centre. Its 25-metre sports pool, therapy pool with a water temperature of 34 degrees, and paddling pool for the youngest visitors each offer something different. Families can choose between swimming, a warm pool and an area for small children. Vitensenteret Kvinesdal adds to this selection with an interactive exhibition and an activity workshop. It opened in January 2024, and new content is available every weekend it is open. The centre is open on the second weekend of each month and during school holidays. It also offers bookable VitenBursdag experiences.

At Bøkkerbua, visitors can discover a traditional craft: during the summer season, they can see how barrel-making, or “bøkring,” was practiced around 100 years ago. Canoes can also be rented there. There is a small bathing spot by the river next to Bøkkerbua. Craft demonstrations, paddling and swimming offer different ways to spend your stay; the craft demonstration is specifically limited to the summer season.

Waterfall, views and trails

Rafossen is a 42-metre-high waterfall north of Kvinesdal town centre. Its distinctive features include a footbridge over the waterfall and a salmon observatory in the power station. Those interested in nature and water will find a different focus here than at the museums. Kvinesdal also has child-friendly cycling routes and training trails.

Another way to explore the surrounding area on foot is to walk the first stage of the Barnevandrerstien. It begins in Kvinesdal municipality at Årlia and ends at Bautaparken, near Snartemo station in Hægebostad. These endpoints help put the stage into context: it leads from a starting point at Årlia to a destination in Hægebostad. You can plan your day around whether you would like to make this particular hike the focus.

A hiking trail to the Fjordsyn day cabin on Dyreknuden offers views over the Fedafjord. The main access point is at the Sande outdoor recreation area car park. If you are planning this hike, you can take the access point into account when choosing the focus of your holiday. Kvinesdal therefore offers cultural and family activities as well as specific destinations for hiking and nature days.

Places within the destination

If you would like to focus your holiday-apartment search on a particular place within the destination, you can also consider Kvinesdal, Feda, Knaben, Kvinlog and Øyestranda. The right choice depends on whether you would most like to include museums and history, activities to enjoy together, or nature and outdoor pursuits in your trip.
