Øvrebø: Hiking Trails, Lake and Cultural Heritage

Forest trails, a lake with a bathing spot and a remarkable collection of cultural heritage sites define Øvrebø. The hikes take you through pine forest or along historic routes, and there is also the wooden church, an old vicarage and other traces of the area’s history. This lets you shape your stay around a variety of interests: outdoor activity, a trip to the water or a glimpse into the area’s past.

Hiking Trails Through Forest and History

Kyrkjevegen starts at Øvrebø Church and passes Kilen husmannsplass, a former smallholding. The hike is considered moderately difficult: as an out-and-back route, it is 7.6 km long and has an elevation gain of 201 metres. The season is listed as “year-round.” The route therefore combines a specific hike with a historic site along the way, so you do not need to plan different themes separately.

The Fjellmannsvegen route from Vollan via the Homme farm to Homstean offers a different landscape. It runs through pine forest and along Sangeslandsvannet. The marked historic transport route is about 10 km long. Near Øvrebø Church, there are newly cleared sections that can be used for hiking. When choosing accommodation, it is therefore important to consider which excursions interest you most; the route description alone does not give any information about the distances between accommodation and the trails.

Sangeslandsvannet: Circular Trail and Bathing Spot

The circular trail around Sangeslandsvannet is 7 km long and includes the old Kjørkeveien. It is considered a well-marked old riding trail. At the eastern end of the circular trail is a municipal bathing spot with a sandy beach and a beach volleyball net. This gives you the choice of a hike and a stop by the water as different parts of an outing. If you are travelling with children, you can take into account when planning the day whether the focus should be on activity, beach time or both.

Church, Vicarage and Other Cultural Heritage Sites

Øvrebø Church is a wooden church built in 1800, with a cruciform floor plan and 300 seats. It is automatically listed as cultural heritage and protected for the period 1650–1850. The old Øvrebø vicarage, built in 1838, lies below Prestefjellet, near the church. Various cultural heritage sites are concentrated in the Øvrebø Church/Sangesland area: in addition to older buildings and the church, there is the vicarage, a historic hillfort, prehistoric and early historic remains, and a cultural landscape.

Notable historic objects include the Korsbautasteinen near Øvrebø, a rare cross stone with a distinctive carved “peg.” The stone was erected as a gravestone for a priest in Øvrebø. The Øvrebø-skien, also known as the Mushomskien, is part of the area’s history too: it was found at the Mushom farm in 1920. These different traces offer culture enthusiasts several specific points of interest, from historic buildings to individual artefacts.

Getting There and Choosing Where to Stay

To access the Fjellmannsvegen route from Vollan to Homstean, you can take the AKT 170 bus. From Skarpengland, it is about a 3 km walk to Øvrebø Church; in Homstean, the bus stop is right by the road. This information can help you plan the route with its starting or ending point in mind.
