Discover Borhaug: maritime history, art and nature

Boats, fishing and shipping

The Listeskøyta Coastal Culture Centre presents the history of the Listeskøyta. This type of boat was developed by Gjert Gundersen around 1814. The boats combined a large cargo capacity with features that were important for their use: they were easy to row and sail, fast, and used for both piloting and fishing. This history illustrates how a single type of boat could serve different purposes on the water.

The centre’s exhibitions also cover topics such as cargo shipping, fishing and shipwrecks. Visitors can also see the escape boat “VA-92L” from the Second World War. In 1941, it sailed from Lista across the North Sea. Another exhibit is the approximately 200-year-old Uggerbyskipet, displayed at Eddabua as part of the Listeskøyta Coastal Culture Centre exhibition on behalf of Agder County. The centre is located at Havneveien 27, 4563 Borhaug.

Lighthouse history and art

A historical exhibition in the Maskinhuset at Lista Lighthouse tells the story of the time when the lighthouse station was the largest in the world. It also covers the many shipwrecks off Listalandet. A model of the lighthouse shows its distinctive signal: a flash every four seconds. The exhibition thus focuses on both the station’s history and its maritime surroundings.

Kunstpunkt Lista offers a different perspective on the region. Since Agder Art Centre and Kunstpunkt Lista took over the gallery operation in 2017, they have produced and presented numerous exhibitions throughout the year. These include solo, group and curated exhibitions of visual art and crafts from Agder. Contemporary art is presented in changing exhibitions, both indoors and outdoors. Art lovers will therefore find a rotating exhibition programme here rather than a single permanent display.

Wetlands and bird migration

The nature exhibitions in Uthuset at Lista Lighthouse are aimed at both children and adults. Drawing on 30 years of counts and ringing at Lista Bird Observatory, they provide insights into the migration of small birds.

The Lista Wetland Visitor Centre is also dedicated to nature: it produces exhibitions and information resources, and its educational programmes teach visitors about the Lista wetland system. The focus is on its internationally recognised conservation values, including Lista’s Ramsar sites, the protected areas around Lista Lighthouse, Slevdalsvannet Nature Reserve and bird migration at Lista. The centre welcomes school groups throughout the year. It also creates tailored nature experiences for groups and individuals. Families can choose between exhibitions for children and adults and individually tailored nature experiences, with topics ranging from bird migration to the protected areas of the wetland system.
