Stave puts a clearly defined natural theme centre stage: the Stave plant reserve (Vere) is protected to preserve its rich and diverse flora and the plants’ habitats. To help guide your travel plans, there is also a coastline characterised by pebble and boulder beaches, as well as a running course and a cycling circuit that pass through or near Stave. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can weigh up whether you are particularly interested in protected plant habitats, the coastal landscape, or active routes.

A protected area between land and sea

The protected area covers a defined land area of about 80 Daa between Trihaugodden in the west and Stavstø in the east. It also includes marine areas down to a depth of 6 metres. The purpose of the protection is to safeguard the flora and its habitats within the area. Its coastline is classified as a moraine coast and moraine cliff coast, and is characterised by pebble and boulder beaches. Stave therefore brings together the protection of plants and their habitats with a specifically described coastal landform. If you choose destinations based on nature themes, this combination offers a clear focus.

Running and cycling as different travel inspirations

The “Helmaraton tidligstart” course runs through Vere to Stave, then towards Verevågen and along the Kyststien trail to the car park at Lista Lighthouse (Lista fyr). The full running course is 42.195 metres long, relatively flat, and has only minor changes in elevation. More than a third of it runs along gravel paths beside idyllic bodies of water and through cultural landscapes. Course details may change for future editions; if you are planning to take part in a specific edition, check its route.

The “Rundtur på Flat-Lista” cycling circuit follows an asphalt road past Vere and Stave and is classified as a moderately difficult route. The two options address different planning considerations: for the run, the route, total distance, and elevation profile are relevant; for the cycling tour, the difficulty rating and paved route. This lets you plan your trip around whether you are more interested in the described running course or a cycling circuit, without conflating their different details into a single difficulty rating.

Farsund as a wider destination

The wider destination of Farsund offers further nature and cultural themes. More than 400 bird species have been observed on Lista; the bird sanctuaries on Lista protect important stopover, breeding, and wintering areas. In the wider region, Vest-Lista was designated in 2009 as one of Norway’s nationally selected cultural landscapes in agriculture. These themes give you additional points of interest if you would like to include wildlife watching and cultural heritage in your trip alongside Stave’s plant life and coastal landscape.

The maritime cultural heritage of the wider destination of Farsund includes the Listeskøyta Coastal Culture Centre. Visitors can go aboard the 1907 Listeskøyta “Linda,” see the Second World War escape boat “VA-92L,” which travelled from Lista across the North Sea in 1941, and visit exhibitions about cargo transport, fishing, and shipwrecks. When choosing a holiday apartment, it helps to decide first whether you want to focus on Stave for its protected natural area or also explore other nature and cultural themes in the wider destination of Farsund.
